Frequently Asked Questions About the Garmin Force Current
What kayaks can use the Garmin Force Current?
The Force Current mounts on the stern, so the kayak needs a stern mounting area that is flat, structurally sound and large enough to carry the mount, with access underneath for the mounting hardware or any reinforcement. It also needs clearance for the motor to deploy, steer and stow without fouling a rudder, and the capacity to carry the motor along with the 12- or 24-volt battery system it requires. Fit is not universal, and we will not claim a particular kayak works without checking it: the mount pattern has to line up with your hull, which the mounting answer below sets out in detail. What is the difference between the Force Current Yes and No foot-pedal options?
The two Force Current options on this page differ only in whether the wireless Power Steer foot pedals are included. The Yes option ships with the left and right Power Steer pedals together with their rail mounts and kickstands. The No option does not include foot pedals of any kind. Everything else is identical, and both options include the handheld wireless remote, so the lower-priced configuration is a complete, fully operable motor rather than a stripped one. Pedals can be added later as a separate purchase. The remote-only option may suit anglers who prefer less equipment on deck, while the pedal bundle adds hands-free throttle and steering control.
Can the Force Current be operated without the Power Steer pedals?
Yes — the Force Current is fully operable through the handheld remote, which is included with both options on this page. The remote controls throttle and steering, uses point-and-go gesture steering when you hold and point it, and carries dedicated buttons for cruise control, maximum speed, manual mode, heading hold, anchor mode and waypoints, plus four programmable keys. It runs on two AA batteries, is rated IPX7, and uses a 1.2-inch sunlight-visible color display. The Power Steer pedals add hands-free steering and throttle so the rod never has to be set down; they change how you control the motor, not what the motor can do.
What thrust does the Force Current provide at 12 and 24 volts?
The Force Current is rated for a maximum of 30 pounds of thrust at 12 volts and 50 pounds of thrust at 24 volts, each figure measured per ISO 13342 with the high-efficiency propeller, in relatively calm water and with the motor set deep enough not to ventilate. It delivers both forward and reverse thrust across twenty speed steps in each direction, which is what makes tight turns and backing off structure practical. We publish no speed figure for it: how fast a kayak moves depends on hull, load, wind and current, and any single number would mislead. A weedless propeller is included alongside the high-efficiency one.
What battery and circuit protection does the Force Current require?
The Force Current runs on a 12- or 24-volt battery, which is not included, and the positive lead on the power cable must be connected through a circuit breaker or fuse rated for 40 amps continuous. The motor accepts 10 to 32 Vdc input and its electrical system is rated for up to 40 amps continuous. Maximum consumption is about 512 watts at 12.8 Vdc or 1024 watts at 25.6 Vdc. The breaker must be in the off position before the power cable is connected, and connecting the positive wire with no breaker or fuse risks a short, overheating and fire. Does the Force Current include or support a built-in transducer?
No — the Force Current does not include a built-in transducer, and there is no integrated transducer accessory kit offered for it, so sonar has to come from a separately purchased transducer mounted elsewhere on the kayak, using a scupper, through-hull, arm or track mount depending on your hull and your fishfinder. That is a real difference from the bow-mount Force motors, some of which carry sonar in the lower unit. How does the Force Current four-hole stern mounting system fit different kayaks?
The Force Current mount uses a four-hole stern pattern that many kayaks are already drilled for, but it is not a universal fit. Installation depends on how far the nearest existing holes sit from the edge of the stern: within 29 mm the mount bolts directly to them; from 29 to 100 mm a 20 mm spacer goes between the mount and the kayak for clearance; past 100 mm the integrated holes cannot be used, and you need an adapter plate for your kayak or new holes drilled. A backing plate may also be needed where the mounting surface requires reinforcement. Verify the pattern before ordering and we will gladly check it with you.
What controls, GPS and Anchor Lock functions does the Force Current have?
The Force Current includes the handheld wireless remote, has built-in dual-frequency GPS and a heading sensor, and offers anchor mode, heading hold, cruise control, waypoint and route following, and jog adjustment of an anchored position from the remote or by gesture. By default anchor mode holds the bow using your GPS position and a vessel-length setting, letting the stern drift; that length defaults to about 12 feet and should be set to your kayak. The motor compass must be calibrated and a GPS fix acquired before autopilot modes engage. Chartplotter, smartwatch and ActiveCaptain functions depend on the connected device and its software version.
How much does the Force Current weigh, and can it be removed for transport?
The Force Current weighs about 22.2 pounds as a motor on its own and about 27.8 pounds with the mount and cable included. It is built to come on and off: the motor lifts off the mount so it can be carried and stored separately from the kayak, while the mount stays bolted in place. A pull rope and cleat let you stow and deploy the propeller drive one-handed on the water, and a depth adjustment collar sets how deep the motor sits. Whether one person can lift and load it comfortably still depends on your kayak, your vehicle and your own strength.
What is included with the Force Current, and what warranty applies?
Both Force Current options include the motor and mount, the wireless remote with lanyard, a man overboard tag, a power cable, a pull rope and cleat, a skeg, a high-efficiency propeller, a weedless propeller, mounting hardware and documentation; the Yes option adds the Power Steer foot pedals with rail mounts and kickstands. A 12- or 24-volt battery, a charger, the required 40-amp breaker or fuse, and any chartplotter or transducer are separate purchases. Coverage is a three-year limited warranty for recreational, noncommercial use, reduced to one year with commercial use, excluding corrosion and damage from inadequate cleaning after salt or brackish use.
