Frequently Asked Questions About the Hobie Mirage Oasis
Who is the Oasis best suited to?
Two people who want the longer, higher-capacity pedal tandem with matched drives. It is 14 ft 6 in, carries 550 lb, and comes with two MirageDrive 180 units.
It suits lakes, bays and protected coastal water. At 33 in it is narrower than the Compass Duo, and heavier at 130 lb fully rigged.
Cold water deserves more respect than air temperature suggests. Dress for immersion and pick conservative days while you learn the boat.
Which drives are included?
It comes with two MirageDrive 180 units with Kick-Up Fin technology and ARC cranks.
Two matched MirageDrive 180 units means both positions have the same capability, which is the difference from Hobie's other pedal tandem — that one ships a mixed pair.
Both drives lift out of their wells for shallow water and transport. Confirm the drive package against the current model year before ordering.
Does it have reverse?
Both drives are MirageDrive 180 units, the drive that provides forward and reverse.
The word reverse does not appear in this model's published description, so this describes the drive rather than a claim made about the hull. Confirm the current package if it is decisive.
Reverse is worth more on a tandem than on a solo hull: backing a 14 ft kayak off a bank beats turning it in a channel.
What seats does it come with?
Seat capacity is 275 lb, alongside the 550 lb carrying capacity for the kayak.
The seats are Vantage CT seating.
Seat capacity is per seat rather than a total, so check it against the heavier of the two paddlers. Both seats lift out for transport and for cleaning, which also drops the weight you carry to the water.
Are paddles included?
A paddle is not listed with this model. Budget for two, one for each seat.
They are the backup if a drive fouls, and what you use in water too shallow for the fins. On a kayak this size that is a routine part of a day rather than an emergency measure, so buy paddles you are happy to use for a while.
How much can the Hobie Mirage Oasis carry?
Carrying capacity is 550 lb, with a separate 275 lb seat capacity. The first covers the kayak, the second is the limit for the seat.
Fitted hull weight is 96 lb and fully rigged weight is 130 lb — fitted is the hull as supplied, fully rigged includes the drive, seat and standard equipment. Work to the carrying capacity and leave margin under it.
On a tandem, add both paddlers' actual weights first, then seats, drives and gear.
How do I transport and store it?
Length 14 ft 6 in, width 33 in. Fitted hull weight 96 lb, fully rigged 130 lb.
Remove both drives and both seats before road transport. Support the hull evenly, keep strap tension moderate, and store the kayak off its cart.
Confirm the load ratings of your vehicle, crossbars and rack before buying rack hardware. At 130 lb fully rigged this is a two-person lift, and a cart is close to essential. A cart is sold separately.
How does the steering work?
It uses a large twist-and-stow rudder with up/down control.
On a tandem, agree who steers before launching. Two people pedaling at different rhythms while both reach for a rudder control makes for a slow first outing.
Retract the drive and rudder before beaching. Damage from beaching with either one down is excluded from warranty coverage.
What is the procedure in shallow water?
Kick-Up Fins retract on impact, so shallow water and submerged structure are far less likely to damage them. They reduce impact damage rather than removing the risk — raise the drive before crossing anything you can see.
No minimum operating depth is specified. Raise the drive when the fins are close to touching and paddle through.
On a tandem, agree the sequence in advance: drives up, rudder up, paddles out.
How do I care for it, and what warranty applies?
Rinse the hull, drive, rudder and fittings with fresh water after saltwater use, working the drive through its range as you rinse. Store it out of direct sun and support the hull evenly rather than on one hard point — prolonged sun exposure and improper support are both warranty exclusions.
Eligible 2019-and-later hard-shell kayaks carry a three-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Remaining coverage is transferable if the kayak is sold, and a replacement hull carries one year — never less than the remainder of the original three-year term.
Claims are initiated through the authorized dealer the kayak was purchased from, within 30 days of discovering the defect, with proof of purchase. If you bought here, that is us.
