Malone EcoLight 2 Kayak Trailer Package

The EcoLight™ Sport Trailer, when bundled with a Malone carrier system, provides an excellent choice for safe and affordable kayak transport. We offer a selection of four different trailer/carrier packages to carry one, two or four kayaks.

The J-Racks EcoLight™ Package is designed to carry two medium sized touring or recreational kayaks. Each trailer comes with two sets of J-style kayak carriers that work best with traditional V-style hulls.

The V-Racks EcoLight™ Package is designed to carry two sit-inside or two sit-on-top recreational kayaks. Each trailer comes with two sets of V-style kayak carriers that work best with traditional V-style hulls and some non-traditional pontoon style hulls.

Each unit is DOT and Transport Canada certified and proudly built in the USA for years of dependable use. What is included in the EcoLight two-boat package?

You get the EcoLight Sport Trailer plus two sets of kayak carriers, with mounting hardware and load straps for both. The trailer side covers two wheels and tires, the two-piece extended tongue, DOT-approved lighting and bearings, a pre-tested electrical system, pre-fitted chassis components, 58-inch coated steel load bars, molded fenders, and the manual with registration paperwork.

Which carriers arrive depends on the style you select at checkout. The package is built around two medium-sized touring or recreational kayaks.

Should I choose the J-Racks or the V-Racks version?

It comes down to your hulls. The J-Rack version carries two medium touring or recreational kayaks on their side in padded J-cradles, which frees up bar space and suits traditional V-shaped hulls.

The V-Rack version carries two sit-inside or sit-on-top recreational kayaks in V-style cradles. It handles traditional V hulls and copes with some non-traditional pontoon-style bottoms that a J-cradle supports poorly.

If your boats are wide sit-on-tops, fishing hulls, or anything with a flat or tunnel-hull bottom, tell us the make and model before you order — hull shape matters more than length here, and we would rather get it right first time.

How much can the trailer carry with two kayaks on it?

The trailer's 400-pound total rating is the limit, and it covers everything on the frame at once: both boats, both carrier sets, hardware, straps, paddles and any gear you add. Divide that budget across the whole load rather than treating it as a per-boat figure, and remember the carriers themselves consume part of it.

Carrier ratings do not stack on top of the trailer rating. Whichever number is lower in a given configuration — the trailer's total, a carrier's individual limit, or your tow vehicle's capacity — is the one that governs the trip.

What size kayaks does this package suit?

The trailer is rated for canoes and kayaks up to 14 feet, and this package is aimed at two medium-sized touring or recreational boats. Beyond length, check beam and hull shape: two wide sit-on-tops can foul each other on 58-inch bars even when both are well within the length limit.

The bar spread is fixed at 38.5 inches, so the support points cannot be widened for a longer boat. Weigh your kayaks if you are not certain, allow for overhang, and contact our team if you want the combination checked before you commit.

What hitch hardware does my vehicle need?

The trailer coupler requires a 2-inch-diameter hitch ball, and the top of that ball should sit 14 inches from the ground so the trailer tows level. That is the trailer's side of the connection. The trailer uses a flat four-wire harness, so your vehicle needs a matching 4-pin connector or an adapter.

Your vehicle needs a hitch with a receiver, a ball mount that fits that receiver, and a 2-inch ball fitted to the ball mount. A receiver does not take a ball directly, and receiver size is a separate matter from ball diameter — a 2-inch ball does not mean you need a 2-inch receiver. Hitch, receiver, ball mount, ball and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer, and the lowest rating in that chain governs.

Is assembly required?

Yes. The trailer and carriers arrive unassembled, and the trailer takes roughly three to five hours with common shop tools. The carriers mount to the load bars afterwards using the supplied hardware, and their own instructions cover positioning.

Expect components in more than one carton; box count and shipping method vary by configuration. Check everything against the parts lists before starting, keep the documentation envelope, and report anything missing or damaged to us promptly so we can act on it while the paperwork is fresh.

How do I position and secure two kayaks?

Set the carriers so the boats sit centered over the axle and balanced left to right, then leave enough gap between them that hulls and hardware do not contact each other on rough surfaces. Adjust carrier angle to match the hull rather than forcing the boat to match the carrier.

Strap each boat at the carrier contact points and add bow and stern lines for longer hulls. Recheck after the first few miles and at every stop. Straps relax as hulls settle, and that first check is the one that catches it.

What maintenance should I plan for?

Before each trip, check lights, coupler engagement and pin, crossed safety chains, lug nut tightness, tire pressure and tire condition, and every strap. Follow the wheel-bearing service schedule in your trailer's documentation, rinse everything with fresh water after salt water or road salt, and check the carrier mounting hardware periodically for anything that has worked loose.

Inflate to the Malone-recommended cold pressure for this trailer, 40 PSI, checked before towing while the tires are cold, and follow the trailer documentation and current manufacturer specification. A sidewall maximum is not the recommended operating pressure — read the sidewall for tire size, load range and maximum limits, not for the figure to inflate to.

How fast can I tow the EcoLight?

The EcoLight is rated for travel up to 65 mph while carrying loads within its 400-pound limit. That is an equipment rating, not permission to exceed a lower posted limit or travel faster than road, weather, tire, loading or tow-vehicle conditions allow.

Treat that figure as a ceiling set by the equipment, then work down from it. Posted limits, local trailer rules, load, tire condition, crosswind, rain and the tow vehicle you are using all set lower limits in practice, and any of them can be the one that matters on a given day. Trailer speed rules vary by state and province, so check what applies where you are driving.

What warranty applies, and what do I need to register?

The trailer carries a five-year limited warranty on defects in materials and workmanship for the original retail purchaser, subject to the written exclusions. Normal wear, corrosion, accidents, misuse, overloading and problems traced to assembly errors are excluded, and no claim can be guaranteed in advance. Register with Malone within 30 days of purchase and hold on to your original receipt.

Warranty registration is a different thing from registering the trailer with your state. Titling, plates and inspection rules vary by state and province — your state motor vehicle agency is the authority on what your jurisdiction requires.

Best boat accessory ever

It was no small task to assemble but once together it’s great. Everything works like it’s supposed to. Pulls really well. My only complaint so far is the first trip with it my boat ate right through the “pads” on cradles, bummer they didn’t even make it first ride before I have to replace them.

This is one of the best trailer packages for pulling larger style kayaks safely. It came well packed, easy to put together, solid construction, easy to move around the yard once disconnected, tracks well behind the car, and has already given us hours of long distance travel to get to better water locations. The kayaks do not move and stay secure during travel. Much better option than having to lift the kayaks on top of our SUV as they are larger and heavier than most. Would highly recommend. Note: There was some bounce in between the kayaks with the original slim J hooks shipped with the unit. We put a pool noodle in between the boats to project them. After a bit of time we decided to upgrade to the Malone J Pro 2 style J hooks have been very pleased with less bounce.

Perfect Little Set-up

I have two 14' Kayaks and wanted a trailer to haul them, vs roofing them on my SUV. I came across this trailer and the price was right, it arrived in about 5 days and took me roughly 3 hours to put together, not hard at all with the right tools. My only issue was my trailer came with a cracked tail light, I emailed Malone and within 15 minutes they got back to me and I had a new light 3 days later. Everything works great so far, we took the trailer on a 300 mile round trip with no issues. I'm very pleased with both the product, and the service from Malone when I had a small issue. 10 of 10 would buy again

Just about perfect!!!

This trailer rocks for transporting kayaks long distances! It was super easy to assemble with common hand tools though it did take a few hours. I carry my Old Town Otter on a J rack purchased separately, Old Town Topwater 120 on the provided V racks, and a Rhino 4 rod rack in between. I tow the trailer with my Toyota Tacoma; hardly feels like I'm pulling anything and I've not noticed any loss in gas mileage! I'd imagine you could tow this trailer, easily, with any vehicle that has a 2" ball hitch. The trailer is lightweight enough to move around by hand even with kayaks on it which makes moving and storing it in the garage so much easier!

I did have to add a few things in order to make it "perfect" in my mind..
I used solder and marine grade heat shrink to wire the lights since the splices provided didn't seem waterproof to me. I also sleeved all the wiring with cable sleeves so it didn't get cut on the sharp edges of the frame and tongue.
I added a coiled 4-pin to 7-pin adapter so I can use it on my truck and have a greater turning radius without pulling the wires out of the tongue as they were too short to use as-is.
I had to order a spare tire and spare tire carrier that I mounted to the tongue which I thought should probably be included at the price you pay for this trailer.
I added 4 eyelet bolts to the bottom of the frame so I have tie down points for the bow and stearn straps when highway transporting.
Lastly, I ended up ditching the 58" 1-1/4" load bars and replaced them with 72" 1-1/4" load bars so I could fit my rod holder between my kayaks.
*Without going to a 72"-78" crossbar you cannot fit two wide, fishing kayaks on bunks next to each other.*

Overall this is a fantastic trailer made of high quality materials that just needs a few minor parts added to be perfect. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one!

This product was easy to assemble and all the part and paperwork came quickly. I was able to assemble the entire unit in about 4 hours. Keep it going.

Great little trailer

We are very happy with our Malone Eco Trailer. Assembly was fairly easy (few notes about that following).
On the road it handles great and we feel very secure and comfortable towing it.

In addition, the staff at Eco Fishing Shop was very helpful when we ran into some bureaucratic snags trying to get a license plate. So overall we rate Eco Fishing with 5 stars. Two areas of possible improvement during assembly. 1) the wiring instructions have changed so we had a little difficulty figuring out which instructions applied and which no longer applied. 2) The license plate issued by the state of Washington for trailers is the same size as a motorcycle plate, which did not fit the plastic frame provided. We added our own license plate frame which worked out fine.

Good Trailer - BUT

This appears to be a very good trailer. However if you’re getting it to carry two wide kayaks, e.g. Old Town Topwater fishing boats, be aware that they WON’T fit on the trailer as it comes. The racks are too narrow and you’ll run the risk of denting the hulls if you store the boats on the trailer. Malone makes an extended bar set, which will accommodate wider boats, and that fixed my problem. The instructions are okay but plan on taking your time and have a helper if you’re not too mechanically inclined. (Use wire ties to secure the wiring. They’ll be less damaging to wires than the provided metal clips.) Overall the trailer’s worked out well , providing a much more convenient way to haul my boats, but has been on the road only once because of all the rain so far so we’ll see.

Easy Assembly and Reliable on the Road

I found the trailer to be easily assembled using the instruction sheet provided. When I picked up my kayaks, I found the 58" load bars to be too narrow and I needed the 78" load bars for my two kayaks. Lesson to learn is what is the beam measurement of your two kayaks and order the appropriate load bar. Trailer is light weight but handles road travel very well. Would recommend the product to anyone, especially in comparison to the price of other kayak trailers.

Great little trailer for hauling an Old Town Salty and a Perception Pescador. Assembly took about 4.5 hours for two of us using the manual and YouTube video.

Good little trailer

After the initial issues, which I believe, are caused by BAD QUALITY CONTROL, this trailer is excellent for hauling two kayaks. I don't even know the trailer is behind my Chrysler van. I can watch it in the rear-view mirror to see if any issues arise. It rides very well and no extreme bouncing. I am very happy with this trailer, now that I have corrected all the issues. The Manufacturer worked with me on the issues and came up with a good compromise for reimbursement on the repairs.

Kayaking Made Easy

So very happy with our new trailer. Easy to assemble. It was shipped much earlier than predicted. Loading the kayaks is so much easier. I hookup the trailer to my golf cart and down to the beach we go. Loading/unloading is so simple, it beats wrestling the kayaks on top of the car and saves my back.

Hi there, The Malone EcoLight 2 Boat Kayak Trailer Package is 58" wide overall with the crossbars installed. Without the crossbars, it’s 55" wide. Malone lists the assembled frame itself at 40" wide without the fenders.

So for a gate, you'd need at least 58" of clear opening, though I’d recommend a little extra clearance, deally 60"+, so you aren’t trying to squeeze it through.
