The EcoLight™ Sport Trailer, when bundled with a Malone carrier system, provides an excellent choice for safe and affordable kayak transport. We offer a selection of four different trailer/carrier packages to carry one, two or four kayaks.

The MPG586XL EcoLight™ Package is designed to carry four medium sized touring or recreational kayaks. Each trailer comes with one set of stacker style kayak carriers, eight foam kayak blocks and eight load straps. This carrier system works best with traditional V-style hulls.

Each unit is DOT and Transport Canada certified and proudly built in the USA for years of dependable use. The EcoLight trailer is rated for travel up to 65 mph while transporting loads within its 400-pound limit. Features a reinforced extra-long tongue, 58" wide steel load bars, molded fenders, 8" high-speed tires and a 2" receiver with lift handle. What is included in the four-boat stacker package?

The package pairs the EcoLight Sport Trailer with one set of padded stacker-style carriers, four foam kayak block kits (eight blocks in total) and eight load straps. The trailer side covers two wheels and tires, the two-piece extended tongue, DOT-approved lighting and bearings, a pre-tested electrical system, pre-fitted chassis components, 58-inch load bars, molded fenders, and the manual with registration paperwork.

The stackers carry boats on edge either side of the uprights, while the foam blocks support hulls resting directly on the bars.

Can it carry four kayaks?

It is configured for four medium-sized recreational or touring kayaks, but the 400-pound trailer rating is what decides any actual load. Four boats, the stacker set, the foam blocks, straps and any gear all come out of that same 400 pounds.

Work it out with real figures rather than estimates: weigh each boat as you travel with it, add the carriers, blocks, straps and gear, and compare the total against 400 pounds. Four boats averaging 55 pounds each leaves headroom; four heavy fishing kayaks may not. It is a budget for the whole load, not a per-boat allowance, and the stacker's own rating never adds to the trailer's limit.

What size and shape of kayak works with stackers?

The trailer is rated for boats up to 14 feet, and this carrier system works best with traditional V-style hulls, which sit stably on edge against a stacker upright.

Wide sit-on-tops, pontoon or tunnel hulls and heavy fishing kayaks are poor stacker candidates — they present a large flat face to the wind and do not seat cleanly on edge. Those hulls are usually better on bunks or saddles. Check length, beam, weight and hull profile for each boat, and contact our team if you are mixing hull types on one trailer.

How do the stackers and foam blocks work together?

The stacker uprights give you a vertical face to rest boats against, so kayaks travel on edge rather than flat. That is what makes four boats possible on 58-inch bars.

The foam blocks cushion hulls that sit on the load bars themselves and stop bar abrasion. A mixed arrangement is possible — inner boats on blocks, outer boats leaning on the uprights — and eight straps are supplied so every boat gets its own pair. Set the arrangement to suit the hulls you actually own.

What hitch hardware does my tow vehicle need?

The trailer coupler requires a 2-inch-diameter hitch ball, and the top of that ball should sit 14 inches from the ground so the trailer tows level. That is the trailer's side of the connection. The trailer uses a flat four-wire harness, so your vehicle needs a matching 4-pin connector or an adapter.

Your vehicle needs a hitch with a receiver, a ball mount that fits that receiver, and a 2-inch ball fitted to the ball mount. A receiver does not take a ball directly, and receiver size is a separate matter from ball diameter — a 2-inch ball does not mean you need a 2-inch receiver. Hitch, receiver, ball mount, ball and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer, and the lowest rating in that chain governs.

Does it need assembly?

Yes. The trailer assembles in roughly three to five hours with common shop tools, and the stacker set mounts to the load bars afterwards using the supplied hardware. Chassis components arrive pre-fitted and the wiring is pre-tested.

How should four boats be loaded and strapped?

Balance them. Two boats per side, heavier hulls low and inboard, and the whole load centered over the axle. An uneven four-boat load is far more noticeable on the road than an uneven two-boat load.

Strap each kayak individually at its contact points rather than banding pairs together, and add bow and stern lines for the longer boats. Recheck all eight straps after the first few miles — a stacked load settles more than a flat one, and that is when straps go slack.

What maintenance does it need?

Check the basics before every trip: lights, coupler and pin, crossed safety chains, lug nuts, tire pressure and condition, and every strap and stacker fastener. Service the wheel bearings on the schedule in your trailer's documentation and rinse frame, wheels, stackers and hardware after salt water or road salt. Foam blocks and straps are wear items — replace them when they stop holding tension.

Inflate to the Malone-recommended cold pressure for this trailer, 40 PSI, checked before towing while the tires are cold, and follow the trailer documentation and current manufacturer specification. A sidewall maximum is not the recommended operating pressure — read the sidewall for tire size, load range and maximum limits, not for the figure to inflate to.

How fast can I tow the EcoLight?

The EcoLight is rated for travel up to 65 mph while carrying loads within its 400-pound limit. That is an equipment rating, not permission to exceed a lower posted limit or travel faster than road, weather, tire, loading or tow-vehicle conditions allow.

Treat that figure as a ceiling set by the equipment, then work down from it. Posted limits, local trailer rules, load, tire condition, crosswind, rain and the tow vehicle you are using all set lower limits in practice, and any of them can be the one that matters on a given day. Trailer speed rules vary by state and province, so check what applies where you are driving.

What warranty applies, and what do I need to register?

The trailer carries a five-year limited warranty on defects in materials and workmanship for the original retail purchaser, subject to the written terms. Normal wear, corrosion, accidents, misuse, overloading and assembly errors are excluded, and no claim outcome can be promised up front. Register with Malone within 30 days and keep the original receipt.

That is not the same as registering the trailer for road use. Whether you need a title, plate or inspection depends on where you live — check with your state motor vehicle agency.
