The EcoLight™ Sport Trailer, when bundled with a Malone carrier system, provides an excellent choice for safe and affordable kayak transport. We offer a selection of four different trailer/carrier packages to carry one, two or four kayaks.

The MPG586XB EcoLight™ Package is designed to carry a single fishing or recreational kayak. Each trailer comes with one set of 72" long padded bunks that work with both traditional V-style hulls or non-traditional pontoon style hulls.

These marine grade trailers can be backed down a boat ramp to launch the kayak directly into the water. At 26” from the ground, loading and unloading heavy boats has never been easier.

Each unit is DOT and Transport Canada certified and proudly built in the USA for years of dependable use. The EcoLight trailer is rated for travel up to 65 mph while transporting loads within its 400-pound limit. What is included in the single-kayak package?

The EcoLight Sport Trailer comes with one large kayak bunk kit — a pair of 72-inch padded bunks with mounting hardware and load straps. The trailer side covers two wheels and tires, the two-piece extended tongue, DOT-approved lighting and bearings, a pre-tested electrical system, pre-fitted chassis components, 58-inch coated steel load bars, molded fenders, and the manual with registration paperwork.

It is set up for a single fishing or recreational kayak rather than a pair.

Why bunks instead of cradles for one boat?

Bunks spread the load along a long stretch of hull instead of concentrating it at two narrow contact points. For a heavy fishing kayak, that is the difference between support and a pressure dent.

The 72-inch carpeted bunks also work across hull shapes that cradles struggle with. They handle traditional V-style bottoms and non-traditional pontoon-style hulls alike, and the bunks adjust for width, height and angle so you can match them to the boat rather than the other way round. Set that angle with the boat present, then tighten.

Can I launch the kayak straight off the trailer?

These are marine-grade galvanized trailers and can be backed down a boat ramp so the kayak floats off the bunks, which saves carrying a heavy boat across a parking lot. The load bars sit 26 inches from the ground, so sliding a loaded fishing kayak on and off is manageable solo.

Use judgment at the ramp. Ramp surfaces vary, submerging any trailer accelerates wear on bearings and hardware, and a fresh water rinse afterwards matters. Nothing about the trailer being submersible makes it immune to salt water.

How heavy a kayak can it take?

The trailer is rated at 400 pounds in total, and that figure covers the boat, the bunk kit, straps and anything else you carry — rods, crates, batteries, a cooler. It is not a per-item allowance.

A single fishing kayak generally sits well inside that budget, which is why this configuration suits loaded angling boats. Gear is what catches people out: a fully rigged kayak with a battery, tackle and a cooler can add a hundred pounds. Weigh the boat as you actually travel with it and compare the total against 400 pounds.

What size boat will fit on the bunks?

The trailer is rated for a canoe or kayak up to 14 feet, and the bunks are 72 inches long, so the boat is supported across six feet of its length. Beam and hull profile decide the rest — a very wide sit-on-top may need the bunks set further apart than a narrow touring hull.

What hitch hardware do I need?

The trailer coupler requires a 2-inch-diameter hitch ball, and the top of that ball should sit 14 inches from the ground so the trailer tows level. That is the trailer's side of the connection. The trailer uses a flat four-wire harness, so your vehicle needs a matching 4-pin connector or an adapter.

Your vehicle needs a hitch with a receiver, a ball mount that fits that receiver, and a 2-inch ball fitted to the ball mount. A receiver does not take a ball directly, and receiver size is a separate matter from ball diameter — a 2-inch ball does not mean you need a 2-inch receiver. Hitch, receiver, ball mount, ball and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer, and the lowest rating in that chain governs.

Does it require assembly?

Yes. The trailer assembles in roughly three to five hours with common shop tools, and the bunk kit mounts to the load bars afterwards. Bunk position is adjustable, so budget a little extra time to fit them to your hull properly rather than bolting them down at a guess.

What maintenance does it need?

Before each trip check the lights, coupler and pin, crossed safety chains, lug nuts, tire pressure and tire condition, and the straps. Service the bearings on the schedule in your trailer's documentation, particularly if you launch from a ramp regularly, and rinse frame, wheels, bunk hardware and bunk carpet with fresh water after salt water or road salt. Embedded grit in bunk carpet is what scratches hulls.

Inflate to the Malone-recommended cold pressure for this trailer, 40 PSI, checked before towing while the tires are cold, and follow the trailer documentation and current manufacturer specification. A sidewall maximum is not the recommended operating pressure — read the sidewall for tire size, load range and maximum limits, not for the figure to inflate to.

How fast can I tow the EcoLight?

The EcoLight is rated for travel up to 65 mph while carrying loads within its 400-pound limit. That is an equipment rating, not permission to exceed a lower posted limit or travel faster than road, weather, tire, loading or tow-vehicle conditions allow.

Treat that figure as a ceiling set by the equipment, then work down from it. Posted limits, local trailer rules, load, tire condition, crosswind, rain and the tow vehicle you are using all set lower limits in practice, and any of them can be the one that matters on a given day. Trailer speed rules vary by state and province, so check what applies where you are driving.

What warranty applies, and what do I need to register?

A five-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original retail purchaser, subject to the written exclusions. Normal wear, corrosion, accidents, misuse, overloading and failures caused by not following the instructions are excluded, and no claim can be guaranteed ahead of time. Register with Malone within 30 days of purchase and keep the original receipt.

Warranty registration is separate from state trailer registration. Whether a title, plate or inspection is required depends on your jurisdiction — check with your state motor vehicle agency.

Perfect kit to trailer my kayak

Thanks to Eco Fishing and Malone for a great trailer kit. Because of poor weather it took me about two weekends to put the kit together. The registration packet made it very easy to move through NY DMV. Only had to purchase a couple pieces of hardware missing from the kit to complete the trailer. The trailer should last many years.

EcoFishing did great. My trailer was delivered 2 weeks before a new 12 ft. kayak arrived. It took about 4 hours or so to assemble. I had a tire problem which was quickly resolved. This trailer is well made and really ideal for what I need. The straps work great when used as intended. Recommended.

I have owned boats and trailers for 41+ years, and have an extensive mechanical background. I will list what I feel are the pros and cons of this trailer:

Pros: The trailer kit arrived very quickly. It is surprisingly sturdy, pulls well, and does the job it is made to do! The plug and play wiring surprised me with its quality - it seems well designed and is super simple with very solid connections. No parts or hardware were missing or damaged. The LED lights are quite nice, and the kit even includes clips for attaching the wiring to the trailer frame. Lock nuts on every bolt. Good coupler and safety chains. No complaints with this trailer. Overall it has exceeded my expectations.

Cons: Instructions could be better, but if you are fairly mechanically inclined and read forward in the instructions you'll have no trouble. They advertise 4 hour assembly, but from my experience that is a bit of a stretch if you take your time and really do it right. The list of tools needed is slightly inaccurate - I did not need a 3/8" wrench as listed, but did need a deep well 10 mm socket. You'll also need a 5/8" wrench and socket to assemble the mounting brackets for the bunks. A torque wrench for the lug nuts is also a plus.

It would be helpful to let people know the distance apart to place the bunks per kayak. It’s not easy to do it by yourself and try to adjust them.

Great little trailer

This little trailer works great for me to carry my square stern canoe which was too heavy to lift onto my roof. The only negative is that it was a bit harder to assemble than I thought, better instructions would have helped. Plan for a full day, not just 4-1/2 hours. Also, the white ground wire is too short. I had to buy additional components and splice an extra 6” to it so it would work with my hitch.

When I first received my Trailer Package, it looked a little intimidating with all of the parts that had to be assembled. Once I got started, it was not difficult at all. The instructions were easy to follow, and took me about 4.5 hours, and I took my time.
Its very apparent that the quality of these trailers are very well made, and was very impressed with the hardware.

Trailer is too high for the kayak and I want the load support to be lowered close to be low ride level close to the frame; load support bars should have been holed more so that if you need that lowrider levels should be able to do that. Does echo shop have shorter load bars for this application so that the cross bars will be lowrider levels.

Hi there, Unfortunately, Malone does not currently have a shorter/LowBed load-bar support specifically for the EcoLight. They do offer LowBed support tubes for some of their other trailer platforms, such as the MicroSport, but those are not compatible with the EcoLight trailers and would not work.

The EcoLight's standard crossbars are designed to sit approximately 26" off the ground. I agree that additional mounting positions on those support tubes would make a lower setup useful, but I wouldn't recommend drilling/cutting the existing supports without Malone approving that modification since they're part of the trailer's load-support structure.

can i install the bunks to the frame instead of using those cross beams because they just make the kayak sit too high for my boat launch

Yes, you can make that modification, though this action may void Malone's warranty. Additionally, by drilling new holes may impact your ability to use the provided crossbars later.

Instead of using the U-bolts to attach the bunk brackets to the crossbars, you can drill directly into the main, rectangular galvanized steel frame. You may need to purchase longer carriage bolts or different fasteners (e.g., 3/8" x 1-1/2" galvanized lag bolts) to secure the bunk swivel brackets directly through the metal frame.
