EcoLight Sport Trailer

The EcoLight™ is our most affordable line of kayak trailers. Each unit is proudly designed and built in the USA with high grade galvanized steel for years of use. The EcoLight trailer is rated for travel up to 65 mph while transporting loads within its 400-pound limit. Features a reinforced extra-long tongue, 58" wide steel load bars, molded fenders, 8" high-speed tires, powder coated rims and a 2" receiver with lift handle.

What comes with the EcoLight Sport Trailer?

This is the base EcoLight chassis, and it ships without kayak carriers. The kit covers two wheels and tires, the two-piece extended tongue, DOT-approved lighting and bearings, a pre-tested electrical system, pre-fitted chassis components, the 58-inch coated steel load bars, injection-molded fenders, leaf-spring suspension, a tongue skid plate, and the instruction manual with registration paperwork.

It is the same frame the EcoLight packages are built on, so you choose the carrier style yourself. If you would rather the carriers were specified for you, the single-boat, two-boat and four-boat EcoLight packages cover the common setups.

Are kayak carriers included, and what can I add later?

No carriers are included with the base trailer. The 58-inch load bars accept the usual Malone carrier styles — J-cradles, V-style carriers, stackers, saddles and padded bunks — along with foam blocks and straps.

Two things decide what will work. The bar spread is fixed at 38.5 inches, so a carrier that needs a wider or adjustable footprint is not a candidate. And every carrier carries its own weight rating, which sits underneath the trailer's overall limit rather than adding to it. How much weight can the EcoLight carry?

The trailer is rated for 400 pounds total. That figure is the controlling limit for everything riding on the frame at once — the boats, the carriers or bunks you mount, straps, foam blocks, paddles, and any gear you strap down. It is not a per-kayak allowance, and carrier ratings never add to it.

Your tow vehicle and hitch have their own limits, and the lower of the two figures governs any given trip. Unloaded tongue weight is 12 pounds; how you position the boats changes the loaded tongue weight, so check it rather than assuming it.

What size kayak or canoe will fit?

The EcoLight is rated for canoes and kayaks up to 14 feet. Length is only part of the picture, though. Hull width, hull shape and boat weight all decide whether a particular carrier will support the boat properly, and the fixed 38.5-inch bar spread means your two support points cannot be moved apart for a longer hull.

Before ordering, check your boat's length, beam, weight and hull profile against the carrier you plan to use, and allow for overhang front and rear. If you are close to the limit or running an unusual hull, call 844-987-5777 and we will work through it with you.

What hitch hardware do I need to tow it?

The trailer coupler requires a 2-inch-diameter hitch ball, and the top of that ball should sit 14 inches from the ground so the trailer tows level. That is the trailer's side of the connection. The trailer uses a flat four-wire harness, so your vehicle needs a matching 4-pin connector or an adapter.

Your vehicle needs a hitch with a receiver, a ball mount that fits that receiver, and a 2-inch ball fitted to the ball mount. A receiver does not take a ball directly, and receiver size is a separate matter from ball diameter — a 2-inch ball does not mean you need a 2-inch receiver. Hitch, receiver, ball mount, ball and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer, and the lowest rating in that chain governs.

Does the EcoLight need assembly?

Yes. The trailer arrives unassembled and goes together in roughly three to five hours with common shop tools, following the illustrated instructions in the box. The chassis components arrive pre-fitted and the electrical system is pre-tested.

Components can arrive in more than one carton, and box count and shipping method vary with the configuration. Open and check everything against the supplied parts list before you start, keep the paperwork envelope somewhere safe, and tell us promptly if anything is missing or damaged so we can sort it out at sales@ecofishingshop.com.

How should I load and secure boats on the trailer?

Center the load over the axle and keep it balanced side to side. Weight too far back makes the trailer unstable; weight too far forward loads the hitch. Aim for a positive tongue weight and check it once the boats are on rather than working from the unloaded figure.

Strap each boat down at the carrier or bar contact points, not across unsupported hull, and add bow and stern lines for anything long or light. Recheck every strap after the first few miles and again at each stop — hulls settle and straps relax once the trailer is moving.

What maintenance does an EcoLight trailer need?

Run a short check before every trip: lights working, coupler seated and pinned, safety chains crossed and attached, lug nuts tight, tires inflated and undamaged, and all straps snug. Service the wheel bearings on the schedule in the documentation supplied with your trailer, and rinse the frame, wheels and hardware with fresh water after salt water or winter road salt.

Inflate to the Malone-recommended cold pressure for this trailer, 40 PSI, checked before towing while the tires are cold, and follow the trailer documentation and current manufacturer specification. A sidewall maximum is not the recommended operating pressure — read the sidewall for tire size, load range and maximum limits, not for the figure to inflate to.

How fast can I tow the EcoLight?

The EcoLight is rated for travel up to 65 mph while carrying loads within its 400-pound limit. That is an equipment rating, not permission to exceed a lower posted limit or travel faster than road, weather, tire, loading or tow-vehicle conditions allow.

Treat that figure as a ceiling set by the equipment, then work down from it. Posted limits, local trailer rules, load, tire condition, crosswind, rain and the tow vehicle you are using all set lower limits in practice, and any of them can be the one that matters on a given day. Trailer speed rules vary by state and province, so check what applies where you are driving.

What warranty applies, and what do I need to register?

Malone trailers carry a five-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for the original retail purchaser, subject to the written terms and exclusions. Normal wear, surface corrosion, accident damage, misuse, overloading and failures caused by not following the assembly instructions are not covered, and no warranty outcome can be promised in advance. Register the trailer with Malone within 30 days of purchase and keep your original receipt.

That warranty registration is separate from titling, plating or inspecting the trailer for road use. Those rules vary by state and province — check with your state motor vehicle agency for what applies where you live.
