Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in this package?

Both versions are built on the MegaSport base trailer and include two sets of kayak carriers in the style you select, a full-size spare tire with locking attachment, a wire storage basket, an aluminum diamond plate storage drawer on rollers, a second tier load bar system, the required hardware, and the instruction manuals with registration paperwork. The bunks version also ships with 15-foot straps.

Rod storage tubes and a milk crate cage are not part of this package. If you want those, the Ultimate Angler package includes both.

How does this compare with the Ultimate Angler package?

This one covers the same ground with less of the fishing-specific gear. Both start from the MegaSport base trailer with two sets of carriers, a spare tire, a wire basket, a storage drawer and a second tier load bar system.

The Ultimate Angler adds two telescoping rod storage tubes and a milk crate cage on top of that. If you already own rod storage, or you carry crates a different way, this package covers the trailer and storage without paying for equipment you will not use.

Bunks or SaddleUp Pro?

Padded 84-inch bunks spread the load along a long run of hull, which suits large fishing kayaks and flat or pontoon-style bottoms.

SaddleUp Pro carriers cradle the hull at set points and handle tri-hull, center-keel and other irregular bottom designs well, loading quickly and using less bar width.

Hull shape is what decides it. Send us the make and model of both boats and we will tell you which version supports them properly rather than leaving you to guess.

How much can it carry?

The trailer's 1,000-pound total is the controlling limit and covers everything at once: both kayaks, both carrier sets, the second tier, the storage drawer and its contents, the wire basket and its contents, the spare tire, straps and any loose gear.

Component ratings do not add to that total, and a second tier does not create a second allowance — anything on the upper deck comes out of the same 1,000 pounds. Tow vehicle and hitch limits apply independently, and the lowest relevant figure governs any given trip.

What does the second tier add?

A second level of load bars above the boats, which is where a cargo box, an extra boat or bulky light gear goes. It keeps the main bars clear for the kayaks and gives you somewhere to put things that would otherwise ride loose.

Keep heavy items low. Weight carried high on a trailer affects handling and crosswind behavior noticeably more than the same weight down at bar level, and the loaded storage drawer under the boats is a better place for anything dense.

What hitch hardware does it need?

The trailer coupler requires a 2-inch-diameter hitch ball, and the top of that ball should sit 16 inches from the ground so the trailer tows level. That is the trailer's side of the connection. The electrical connection is a standard 4-pin connector.

Your vehicle needs a hitch with a receiver, a ball mount that fits that receiver, and a 2-inch ball fitted to the ball mount. A receiver does not take a ball directly, and receiver size is a separate matter from ball diameter — a 2-inch ball does not mean you need a 2-inch receiver. Hitch, receiver, ball mount, ball and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer, and the lowest rating in that chain governs.

Unloaded tongue weight is 63 pounds before you add anything, which is higher than the smaller Malone trailers and worth checking against your hitch.

Does it require assembly?

Yes. The trailer goes together first with standard tools and illustrated instructions, then the second tier, carriers, storage drawer, wire basket and spare tire. Chassis components arrive pre-fitted and the wiring is pre-tested.

It ships as a multi-boxed item and the carton count varies between the two versions. Shipping method can vary as well. Inspect the shipment against the supplied documentation before you start, keep the paperwork envelope, and report anything missing or damaged promptly at sales@ecofishingshop.com.

What maintenance does it need?

Before every trip check lights, coupler and pin, crossed safety chains, lug nuts, condition of all three tires including the spare, drawer and basket security, and all straps. Service the wheel bearings on the schedule set out in your documentation. Rinse the frame, wheels, carriers, drawer rollers and basket with fresh water after salt water launches or road salt, and re-check the mounting hardware on the tier and accessories periodically.

Inflate to the Malone-recommended cold pressure for this trailer, 35 to 40 PSI, checked before towing while the tires are cold, and follow the trailer documentation and current manufacturer specification. A sidewall maximum is not the recommended operating pressure — read the sidewall for tire size, load range and maximum limits, not for the figure to inflate to.

What warranty applies, and what do I need to register?

A five-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original retail purchaser, subject to the written terms and exclusions. Normal wear, corrosion, accidents, misuse, overloading and failures caused by not following the instructions are excluded, and no claim can be guaranteed in advance. Register with Malone within 30 days of purchase and keep your original receipt.

That is separate from state trailer registration. Whether you need a title, plate or inspection depends on where you live — check with your state motor vehicle agency.
