What makes the XT different from the standard MicroSport?

Three upgrades. The XT runs aluminum spoke wheels instead of galvanized steel, diamond plate aluminum fenders, and it includes a retractable tongue kit that the standard trailer does not have.

Everything else is shared: the same 800-pound rating, the same 78-inch load bars with adjustable 44-to-63-inch spread, the same reinforced steel tongue that carries boats up to 20 feet, and the same 11-gauge galvanized construction. The XT is heavier at 230 pounds against the standard trailer's 197, largely because of what the tongue kit adds.

How does the retractable tongue help with storage?

It shortens the trailer's overall footprint, which is the difference between a 13-foot-3 trailer fitting in a garage and not. The kit also allows the trailer to be stood vertically on the rear bumpers supplied with it, so it can be stored against a wall rather than taking up a full parking bay.

Measure your garage door height and depth before assuming vertical storage will work — a stood-up MicroSport is tall. Check the ceiling height and the swing clearance you will need to tip it up.

Are kayak carriers included with the XT?

No. The XT is a trailer, not a package, and no boat carriers are supplied. The 78-inch load bars accept the usual Malone carrier styles — J-cradles, saddles, wing carriers, stackers and padded bunks — and the adjustable bar spread lets you set support points to match the hull.

Because the XT carries the retractable tongue kit, confirm compatibility before you add any accessory that mounts to or near the tongue; not every trailer accessory in the Malone range fits every trailer. How much can the XT carry?

800 pounds in total, covering up to a 20-foot canoe or kayak. Everything on the trailer counts toward that figure at once — boats, carriers, bunks, straps, any storage you mount and the gear inside it.

It is a total, not a per-boat allowance, and carrier ratings do not add to it. Your tow vehicle and hitch limits apply independently and the lowest relevant number wins. Unloaded tongue weight is 25 pounds, and how you position the load changes the loaded figure.

What hitch hardware does it need?

The trailer coupler requires a 2-inch-diameter hitch ball, and the top of that ball should sit 15 inches from the ground so the trailer tows level. That is the trailer's side of the connection. Note that 15 inches is lower than the standard MicroSport's 18, so a hitch set up for one is not automatically right for the other. Lighting is a DOT-approved plug-and-play LED kit.

Your vehicle needs a hitch with a receiver, a ball mount that fits that receiver, and a 2-inch ball fitted to the ball mount. A receiver does not take a ball directly, and receiver size is a separate matter from ball diameter — a 2-inch ball does not mean you need a 2-inch receiver. Hitch, receiver, ball mount, ball and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer, and the lowest rating in that chain governs.

Does the XT require assembly?

Yes. It assembles with standard tools using the illustrated instructions, and the retractable tongue kit is part of that build, so allow more time than a plain MicroSport takes. Hubs arrive pre-assembled and the electrical system is pre-tested.

It ships as a multi-boxed item and the carton count and shipping method vary with configuration. Inspect the shipment against the supplied documentation before starting, keep the paperwork envelope, and tell us promptly about anything missing or damaged so we can act on it.

How should the load be positioned?

Center it over the axle, keep it balanced left to right, and set the bar spread to suit the hull rather than leaving the bars where they arrived. The adjustable 44-to-63-inch range exists so support points can be moved to where the boat is actually strong.

Strap at contact points, add bow and stern lines for long boats, and recheck after the first few miles. If you retract the tongue for storage, run through the coupler and pin check again before the next tow rather than assuming it went back correctly.

What maintenance does it need?

Check lights, coupler engagement and pin, crossed safety chains, lug nuts, tire condition and all straps before every trip, and include the retractable tongue mechanism — it should be fully extended and correctly secured before towing. Follow the bearing service schedule in your trailer's documentation, and rinse the frame, aluminum wheels, fenders and hardware after salt water launches or road salt; aluminum is corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof.

Inflate to the Malone-recommended cold pressure for this trailer, 35 to 40 PSI, checked before towing while the tires are cold, and follow the trailer documentation and current manufacturer specification. A sidewall maximum is not the recommended operating pressure — read the sidewall for tire size, load range and maximum limits, not for the figure to inflate to.

What warranty applies, and what do I need to register?

A five-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original retail purchaser, subject to the written exclusions. Normal wear, corrosion, accidents, misuse, overloading and problems traced to assembly errors are not covered, and no claim can be guaranteed in advance. Register with Malone within 30 days of purchase and retain your original receipt.

Warranty registration is not the same as registering the trailer with your state. Title, plate and inspection rules vary by jurisdiction — check with your state motor vehicle agency.

Malone MicroSport XT is great

I recently assembled my Malone MicroSport XT trailer and my wife and I carried our two Hobie Outbacks on a six hour trip each way. The trailer is built with top quality materials and is easy to assemble. One tip I would like to mention is where you get to the part where you will attach the wheels, the instructions fail to mention that you need to install the hubcaps first. The hubcaps are mounted from the inside side of the wheel. The electrical wiring is easily installed. I used dielectric grease on all the connections and also chose to cover all the wire with Alex Tech 1/2 inch Cord Protector Wire Loom Tubing cable sleeve to help protect the wires from wear.
I also chose to cut a piece of 1/4 in plywood to make a cargo carrier to mount on top of the trailer rails. We carried our kayak trolleys and some other things strapped to the top of it. This worked out great.
The trailer handling was rock solid and rode well. The LED lighting is clear and bright. The taillights are supposed to be submersible but we didn’t try that. Our vehicle has a 7 socket trailer plug so I had to buy an adapter to go from 7 sockets to four, but it was not an issue.
In summary, this is a great trailer for hauling kayaks. I highly recommend the bunk bar set if you are hauling heavier kayaks such as the Hobie Outback. This makes them easier to load and also offers great support for the kayak hull.

Solid trailer good service

I was very happy with the speed of delivery for this trailer and the completeness of the kit. A decent screw gun will make assembly go faster as will the online videos posted for its assembly although the paper instructions were pretty good as well. All parts were machined well (no sharp edges) and everything fit together well. Looking forward to using it in the spring.

Great Kayak & Bike Trailer

Takes forever to ship

First the bad news - I ordered at the start of the Kayak Season in NH and the trailer came when the season was almost over. After the first delivery promise of mid June there was absolutely no information on if or when it would ever be delivered. All the while they had the full amount of the trailer in their pocket.
The trailer came with the Malones stickers already applied and they were either beat up in shipping with other metal parts rubbing on them or in a location that was partially covered by other parts attached to the trailer. Also, the square shank of the carriage bolts interferes with the cross braces so the trailer doesn’t tighten properly. I went to the hardware store and got 0.80” thick 1/2” washers to put under the heads of the carriage bolts and then it fasten together tightly.

The good: the assembly instructions are pretty darn good. The end result was very nice trailer. I cut down the cross bars because I only needed to carry 3 Kayaks and the trailer easily fit through the double doors to the basement.

I am happy with the end result but not the process to get the trailer.
