The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit is for anglers who already own a compatible Old Town PDL pedal kayak and want power-assisted pedaling without buying a second boat. It suits long runs to distant water, days with wind or current, and trips where your legs need a break. It is not for kayaks outside the fit list below, and it is not an alternative to a transom-mounted trolling motor on a hull that was never built for a PDL drive.

Which Old Town kayaks does the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit fit?

The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit comes in three console-specific versions, and you need the one built for your hull. The 106 & 120 version fits the Sportsman PDL 106, Sportsman PDL 120, Sportsman PDL 120 PRO, Topwater PDL 106 and Topwater PDL 120. The BigWater version fits the BigWater PDL 132 and Predator PDL. The Malibu version fits the Ocean Kayak Malibu Pedal, Ocean Kayak Malibu Pedal T and Sportsman Salty PDL 120. The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit supplies the ePDL+ drive with its two pedal assemblies, the propeller and prop hardware, the thwart tube, a 36V 6.5Ah lithium-ion battery, its charger, the power cord and kill-switch parts, and the fasteners, lubricants, battery-retention parts and version-specific hinge hardware the installation calls for. The kayak is not included; the kit fits the PDL console opening your hull already has.

How is the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit different from a factory ePDL+ kayak?

The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit converts a PDL kayak you already own, while a factory ePDL+ kayak leaves the plant already powered. The batteries differ: this kit carries a 36V 6.5Ah pack that sits in the console, where factory ePDL+ hulls run a larger 36V 20Ah pack with hull wiring. Runtime therefore differs between the two. The drive modes are the same — manual pedaling, five power-assist levels and five cruise-control levels.

What drive modes does the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit have?

The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit runs in three modes. Manual Pedal works with no battery connected, the same as a standard PDL drive. Power-Assisted Pedal adds motor help across five levels while you keep pedaling. Cruise Control turns the propeller across five levels with no pedaling needed once engaged. Reverse is manual only — pedaling backwards returns the drive to Manual Pedal Mode, and neither assist nor cruise operates in reverse.

How long does the battery last on the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit?

Runtime on the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit depends on the cruise level you hold. On a new, fully charged battery in flat water under a moderate load, figure roughly 13.5 hours at Cruise 1, about 6.5 hours at Cruise 3 and about 1 hour at Cruise 5. Wind, chop, current and total load all move those numbers. Power-assist runtime depends on the selected level, operating conditions, load, and the rider's pedaling input.

What battery and charging does the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit need?

The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit arrives with the 36V 6.5Ah lithium-ion battery and charger it needs, so there is no separate power system or hull wiring to buy. A full charge takes under four hours. Use only the supplied battery and charger. Disconnect and remove the battery before charging it, keep charging between 32°F and 110°F, and do not charge the battery unattended or overnight. For storage, hold it between 40°F and 80°F in a dry spot and bring it back to about 50% every two to three months.

What installation does the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit require?

The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit drops into the console opening on your PDL kayak, with no wiring and no drilling. Before the first launch you fit the two pedal assemblies with the supplied 8 mm wrench key, tightened to 16 ft-lbs and set 180 degrees apart, then fit the propeller and hand-tighten its plastic nut without overtightening. Some Topwater and Sportsman installations also need the supplied hinge-retainer adjustment. The printed installation guide in the box gives the full step sequence and torque figures.

How much weight does the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit add to my kayak?

Installed, the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit weighs 35.6 lbs on the Malibu and 106 & 120 versions and 37.6 lbs on the BigWater version, battery included. It replaces the manual PDL drive already in your console, so the change in your loaded weight is less than those figures — how much less depends on your model and year, and we would rather you weigh your existing drive than take an estimate from us. Count the installed weight against your kayak's rated capacity along with your own weight, seat, paddle, PFD, safety gear, tackle and cooler.

Can the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit be used in salt water?

The Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit is built for fresh and salt water, and the ePDL+ display is waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes. After any trip in salt or brackish water, rinse the drive and every metal fitting with fresh water before you store it. Use caution in water shallower than 16 inches and avoid running the drive aground. Inspect the propeller before each trip and ask us about a replacement prop kit if a blade is chipped.

Do I need to register my kayak after installing the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit?

Fitting the Old Town ePDL+ Retrofit Kit turns a human-powered kayak into a motorized vessel, and most states require registration for electric-powered watercraft. Requirements, fees and how registration numbers must be displayed vary from state to state, so check with your own state's boating agency or department of natural resources before your first launch.
