The Cruise 12.0 is comparable to a 25 HP petrol outboard and can be easily mounted on your boat with a couple of tools. Its power supply requires at least two (Power 48-5000) or four lithium batteries (Power 24-3500).

What is included with the Cruise 12.0 R, and what is not?

The motor ships with TorqLink data communication, the provision to connect to remote steering, a heavy cable set with main switch, a TorqLink data cable, a tilt switch and the standard propeller. Three things you still need are not included: a throttle, batteries and charging equipment. This is a 48-volt system designed around the Torqeedo Power 48-5000 battery, and at this power level the battery bank is a substantial part of the total cost and of the installation planning. Treat the motor as one line on a system order.

Is a throttle included with the Cruise 12.0 R?

No, and the motor cannot be operated without one. Because this is the remote-steering version, speed and direction come from a helm-mounted control rather than from a tiller. The TorqLink throttle with color display is the natural pairing: it communicates with the motor and batteries over TorqLink and displays speed, power draw, state of charge and GPS-based remaining range. If you already own a Torqeedo throttle, send us the model before ordering and we will confirm compatibility rather than let you find out on the water.

How many batteries does the Cruise 12.0 R need?

Two, to see the performance the motor is rated for. Run it on a single Power 48-5000 and output is reduced to 6 kW — half the 12 kW continuous rating, and a substantial change in how the boat behaves. A matched pair of Power 48-5000 batteries is the standard configuration. Going beyond two batteries is possible but is not a self-service change; it has to be specified through a Torqeedo dealer, and we can handle that. Size the battery bank before you order, because it drives cost, weight and where everything sits.

What does 12 kW and 25 HP equivalent actually mean?

They are two different measures, and neither is a boat speed. The 12,000 W figure is continuous input power: the electrical power the motor draws from the battery bank on a sustained basis. The 25 HP equivalence is a comparison with the propulsion a 25 hp petrol outboard delivers — a way of translating electric propulsion into a familiar scale, not a statement of electrical shaft power and not a guarantee that your boat will do what a 25 hp petrol boat does. Hull, displacement, load and propeller decide the result.

What boats is the Cruise 12.0 R intended for?

The Cruise 12.0 R is intended for larger displacement motorboats and cruising sailboats. Loaded displacement, transom construction, steering, battery placement and total installation weight must all be verified before ordering. Weight is the constraint buyers most often underestimate: the motor alone is around 60 kg and each Power 48-5000 adds 36.5 kg, so a two-battery installation is well over 130 kg that has to sit somewhere sensible without spoiling the boat's trim. How do I choose between S, L and XL?

Measure the transom and match it. The three shafts measure 38.5, 51.2 and 63.9 cm (15.2, 20.2 and 25.2 in), and transom height is taken from the top edge of the transom straight down to the bottom of the keel. Longer is not safer. A shaft that is too long adds drag and increases grounding risk; one that is too short lets the propeller ventilate and lose thrust as soon as the bow lifts. Torqeedo's installation drawings show the mounting geometry, and we will check your figures against them.

What speed, range and runtime should I expect?

Expect a range of outcomes rather than a single figure. Published performance data for this motor is measured with two Power 48-5000 batteries and shows the shape of the trade-off clearly: around ten hours at slow speed, well under two hours at half throttle, and under an hour at full throttle. Speed and distance both depend heavily on the hull. Displacement, load, propeller choice, hull fouling, wind, current and water temperature all move the result, so plan a passage on the conservative end with reserve in hand.

What propeller comes fitted, and are alternatives available?

The standard propeller is a v22/p10k and it is supplied with the motor. An alternative v32/p10k is listed for this motor family, and the choice matters more at this power level than at any other: pitch determines whether the motor can reach its rated speed without laboring, and the wrong choice costs both top end and runtime. A lightly loaded planing hull and a heavy displacement cruiser do not want the same blade. Describe the boat and how you use it and we will recommend accordingly.

How does the tilt and trim work?

The Cruise 12.0 R uses an electro-hydraulic tilt device with overload protection, operated by the tilt switch supplied with the motor, over a range of plus or minus 45 degrees. Overload protection matters in shallow water: it lets the leg give way rather than transmitting a grounding straight into the transom. Trim is separate and manual, set in four steps, and adjusts the running angle of the leg so the propeller thrust lines up with the hull. Getting trim right is worth real efficiency, so set it once the boat is loaded.

What warranty applies, and what routine care does it need?

Torqeedo warrants the product free from defects in workmanship and material under normal use, proper installation and proper maintenance for twenty-four months from delivery, with any claim raised within six months of discovering the fault; commercial and public-authority use falls outside that term, and batteries carry their own two-year non-commercial warranty. Rinse the motor with fresh water after salt or brackish water, inspect the sacrificial anodes at least every six months, and store the motor dry and the batteries cool at partial charge. Torqeedo 12R engine

I have 2 of these engines that power my 40,000 pound 45 foot catamaran. They wirk great and I an pleased with their performance. I have reached up to 9 knts. My catamaran is now a power hybrid cat. Deisel and ele tric. We recently finished a 2100 mile trip to the Bahamas. The engines were a blessing. We charge our 80KWHr lithium iron phosphate battery bank with solar and our genset when needed.
