Frequently Asked Questions About the Torqeedo Travel Ultralight

Does the Torqeedo Travel Ultralight come with a battery?

Only in the battery configuration. This listing is sold two ways: motor only, and motor packaged with the Travel Battery Ultralight. The motor-only choice ships with the drive, the kayak mounting system, the cabling, the remote throttle, a charger and the emergency magnetic stop key — but no battery, and the Travel Ultralight will not run without one. Check the option you have selected in the cart before you order. If you already own a Travel Battery Ultralight, the motor-only configuration is the one you want; if you do not, choose the package that includes the battery, and contact us to confirm current Travel Battery Ultralight availability before selecting the motor-only configuration.

Which battery does the Travel Ultralight use?

It runs on the Travel Battery Ultralight, a 1,080 Wh lithium-ion pack with a 44-volt nominal system voltage and an IP67 water-protection rating, weighing 8.6 kg (about 19 lb). Wh, or watt-hours, is a measure of stored energy: the higher the figure, the longer the motor can run at a given power draw. That battery is documented as the Travel Ultralight's battery, and the batteries built for the Travel and Travel XP outboards are not interchangeable with it. Do not assume a Torqeedo battery from another model line will fit or communicate correctly — ask us first.

What comes in the box with the motor?

The Travel Ultralight ships as a complete kayak drive apart from the battery: the motor itself, the kayak mounting system, the connecting cables, the remote throttle with its backlit color display and on-board computer, GPS-based range calculation, a charger, and the emergency magnetic stop key. The 9.8 kg (21.6 lb) weight quoted for this motor covers that whole assembly — motor, mounting system, cables and remote throttle — not the bare drive unit, so it is the number to use when you are working out what you will actually be lifting onto the kayak.

How is the Travel Ultralight steered, and is a throttle included?

A remote throttle is included, and the motor is built to connect to a kayak's foot-control steering system. You steer the kayak the way you already do, with your feet, and control speed and direction with the hand throttle; there is no tiller arm to reach for. The throttle's backlit color display doubles as the on-board computer, showing speed, power draw, battery charge and remaining range in time or distance, with GPS-based range calculation. Because steering comes from the kayak, confirm your hull actually has a rudder and foot controls before ordering.

What kayaks and boats is the Travel Ultralight intended for?

It is a trolling motor for kayaks, canoes and very light boats, and it is designed to mount to a kayak using the supplied mounting system and steer through the hull's own foot-control rudder. Fit is not universal. Deck layout, scupper and track positions, hull thickness and the position of your rudder all decide whether the mount lands where it needs to on a particular kayak. Torqeedo's installation drawings show the system layout, and we are happy to check your specific kayak against them before you order.

What propeller does it come with, and is a weedless option available?

The standard propeller is a 10 x 6.5 WDR. A three-blade weedless propeller of the same 10 x 6.5 size is offered as a separate accessory for anglers who spend their time in vegetation, grass beds and lily pads, where a standard blade will load up and lose thrust. The weedless blade is not part of the motor package, so order it alongside the motor if your water demands it. Propellers are model-specific: a Travel or Travel XP propeller is a different part and will not substitute.

How far will the Travel Ultralight go on a charge?

That depends on the kayak, the load, the propeller and the conditions, so treat any figure as an estimate rather than a promise. Published test data for this motor was recorded on one specific 14-foot fishing kayak: at full throttle a fully charged Travel Battery Ultralight lasts roughly an hour, while at slow trolling speeds the same pack runs for many hours. Wind, chop, current, a loaded hull, a fouled propeller and cold weather all shorten it. Plan your day on the low end of the estimate and keep a paddle aboard.

How do you charge it, and what charging accessories are extra?

A mains charger is included with the motor, and the battery has an LED that shows charge status at a glance even when the pack is off the motor. Two other charging routes exist as separate accessories rather than in-box items: a 12-volt charging cable for topping up from a vehicle or boat system, and a solar charging cable that lets you charge from a panel, including while you are running. Neither is included, so add them at the time of purchase if you want them.

What maintenance and off-season storage does it need?

Rinse the motor with fresh water after every saltwater trip, check the sacrificial anodes regularly and replace them before they are consumed, and store the motor only when it is dry. Lithium packs prefer a cool store at a partial state of charge rather than full or flat, so put the battery away around half charged and keep it somewhere cool rather than in an unheated shed or a hot garage. Torqeedo's operating instructions carry the full service schedule and the exact anode inspection interval.

What warranty comes with the Travel Ultralight?

Torqeedo's standard warranty covers the product against defects in workmanship and material under normal use, correct installation and correct maintenance, for twenty-four months from the date of delivery. A claim has to be raised within six months of discovering the fault, and normal wear and routine servicing are not covered. Commercial and public-authority use sits outside that two-year warranty. Full terms are on Torqeedo's warranty policy page. Keep your proof of purchase and your serial number — a claim needs both, and we can help you file one.
