What is the difference between the Travel XP T and the Travel XP R?

How the motor is controlled, and what control hardware is in the box. The T is the tiller version: you steer and control speed with the tiller arm, which carries the integrated display, and no separate throttle is supplied or needed. The R is the remote version: it is built to connect to a boat's own steering, and it is supplied with a TorqLink throttle with color display. Neither is an upgrade of the other. A tiller version does not include remote-control equipment, and a remote version does not come with a tiller.

Does the Travel XP come with a battery?

Only in the battery configurations. Each shaft length and control type is offered both as a motor-only purchase and as a package that includes the Travel Battery XP, and on this listing those two are separated by price rather than by an obvious label. Before you check out, confirm which one you are buying — the motor-only choice ships with no power source, and the Travel XP will not run without a Torqeedo Travel-series battery. If the selection is not clear on screen, call us and we will confirm the exact configuration on your order.

Which battery does the Travel XP use?

The Travel XP is designed around the Travel Battery XP, a click-and-play lithium pack that seats on the motor with no cables to connect and weighs 9.6 kg (about 21 lb). Whether a battery comes with your motor depends entirely on the configuration you select: every shaft length and control type is offered both motor-only and as a package including the battery. The lower-capacity Travel Battery is also listed as compatible with the Travel XP, though that pairing carries a documented power caveat, so check with us before running one. We confirm the exact pack shipping on your order.

How much more powerful is the Travel XP than the standard Travel?

The Travel XP provides more thrust than the standard Travel, and it is the model built for heavier boats and more demanding conditions — coastal water, wind, chop and current. The clearest way to see the gap is in what each is rated to move: the standard Travel is specified for tenders, dinghies and daysailers up to 1.5 tons, the Travel XP for boats up to 2 tons. It draws more power to do it, at 1,600 W of continuous input against the Travel's 1,100 W. What that becomes in thrust on the water still depends on your hull, its load and the propeller fitted.

What comes in the box?

Every Travel XP ships with the outboard, the emergency stop magnetic chip, a 180 W charger, the standard 11 x 8 WDR propeller, the shaft anode, the fin and the operating instructions. The control hardware then depends on which version you chose: the tiller version arrives with its tiller control, and the remote version arrives with a TorqLink throttle with color display. A battery is included only on the battery configurations, so check the option showing in your cart before you check out rather than after the crate arrives.

What boats is the Travel XP intended for?

It is rated for tenders, dinghies and daysailers up to 2 tons, and it is the Travel-family motor aimed at coastal water and at boats that have to push through wind and waves. Its 5 HP equivalence is a comparison with the propulsion a 5 hp petrol outboard delivers — it is not a measure of electrical shaft power and not a guarantee of any particular boat speed. A heavy, beamy or badly loaded hull will not reach what a light one does. If your boat is near or above 2 tons, talk to us before ordering.

How do I choose between the short and long shaft?

Measure the transom first. The short shaft is 62.5 cm (24.6 in) and the long shaft is 75 cm (29.5 in), measured on the motor, and transom height is taken from the top edge of the transom straight down to the bottom of the keel. Neither length is right for every boat. A shaft that is too short lets the propeller ventilate and lose bite the moment the bow lifts or a wave passes; one that is too long adds drag and increases the chance of striking the bottom. Borderline measurements are worth a phone call.

What speed, range and runtime should I expect?

Expect a range, not a number. Published performance data for the Travel XP was recorded on three different test boats — a one-class racing sailboat, a 3.8 m inflatable dinghy and a 2-ton sailboat — at an outside temperature of 22 °C, and the same charge produced noticeably different speeds and distances on each. Deviations from outside temperature, current and boat weight are expected. In broad terms, full throttle empties a pack in well under an hour while slow cruising stretches it several times further. Your hull, load and conditions decide the rest.

How is the Travel XP battery charged?

A 180 W mains charger is included with the motor. Beyond that, the battery can be charged directly from the boat with a 12 V / 24 V charge cable, or from solar panels with a solar charge cable — both of those cables are separate accessories rather than in-box items. An LED on the pack shows state of charge at a glance even when the battery is off the motor. If you cruise away from shore power, add a charging cable at the time of purchase rather than after the fact.

What warranty and routine care does the Travel XP need?

Torqeedo warrants the product against defects in workmanship and material under normal use, correct installation and correct maintenance for twenty-four months from delivery, with claims raised within six months of discovering the fault; commercial and public-authority use falls outside that two-year warranty. Care is straightforward: rinse the motor with fresh water after every saltwater outing, check the anodes at least every six months or 100 operating hours, store the motor dry, and store the battery cool at around half charge.
