Frequently Asked Questions About the 3 Waters Big Fish 120 V3

Who is the Big Fish 120 V3 designed for?

The 120 V3 is for anglers who want a stable 12-foot fishing platform and intend to add their own stern-mounted motor, rather than buy propulsion in the box.

It is the longer of the two Motor Ready V3 hulls, so it tracks better and carries more than the 105 V3, at the cost of being harder to move on land. If you would rather have pedal power included from day one, the pedal models are the better starting point — our 3 Waters buyer’s guide walks through the range.

Does it come with a motor, and what size motor can I use?

No motor is included. “Motor-ready” means the mounting and steering hardware is built in at the factory, so you are not modifying a hull designed for paddling only.

There is one hard limit to shop by: a maximum of 1.8 hp is recommended. That rules out larger outboards regardless of how well they might physically mount.

The hull carries a 4-point stern motor mount and a motor-specific Smooth Move foot steering system, so you steer with your feet and keep both hands free to fish. Beyond the 1.8 hp figure there are no published limits for shaft length, thrust or motor weight — tell us the motor you have in mind and we will confirm the pairing before you order. Our guide to kayak fishing motors covers the categories and price ranges.

Can I add a pedal drive to it later?

Yes. The 120 V3 is built on a modular design and can be retrofitted with the Pro Fish Pedal Drive System as your fishing style and needs evolve.

We sell the Pro Fish Drive as a standalone unit, so you can start as a paddle or motor setup and add pedal power later without changing boats. The drive weighs 21 lbs on its own.

One thing to check with us first: there is no published guidance on whether a retrofit also needs the rudder and steering kit that the factory pedal models ship with. Ask before you buy the drive and we will confirm what the conversion actually requires.

What are its dimensions and how much does it weigh?

The 120 V3 measures 12 ft 0 in long with a 33.25 in beam, and weighs 110 lbs.

At 110 lbs it is above the roughly 100 lb ceiling our car-topping guide treats as the practical limit for roof-loading, so plan on a trailer or a cart rather than lifting it onto a vehicle. At 12 ft it will also overhang the bed of any standard pickup.

Worth checking before you order: you will want roughly 12.5 ft of clear space for garage or shed storage.

How much weight can it carry?

The rated maximum capacity is 400 lbs, and that figure includes paddler, gear, and any other items. It is a total loaded weight, not a payload allowance on top of your own body weight.

That total has to cover you, a motor, a battery, tackle and anything you catch. A motor and battery together take a real bite out of it, so a fully rigged 120 V3 has less spare capacity than 400 lbs suggests at a glance. Our guide to choosing a fishing kayak for bigger anglers explains how to work out realistic usable capacity.

Can I stand up and fish from it?

Yes — it is built for it. It has a padded, reinforced standing platform and a cathedral tri-hull design, the wide multi-chined hull shape that gives the Big Fish series its reputation for stability.

The number underneath that is the beam: 33.25 in. That is paired with a 12-foot waterline, which is the more forgiving of the two Motor Ready V3 hulls when you are on your feet.

Being straight about the limits: how stable any kayak feels standing depends on water conditions, how it is loaded and your own balance, and no published figure captures that. Our fishing kayak hull guide explains how hull shape drives stability if you are comparing across models.

How should I clean, store and maintain it?

Rinse it with fresh water after every saltwater trip, store it out of prolonged direct sunlight, and keep it away from temperature extremes.

That is not just good practice — it is written into the warranty, which excludes damage from prolonged or repeated exposure to harsh environmental elements, including UV exposure, saltwater corrosion, extreme temperatures, and improper storage and maintenance. A hull left uncovered in full sun through a season is the most common way owners fall outside coverage.

If you have no shaded or indoor storage, budget for a cover or a shaded rack alongside the kayak.

What warranty applies, and how do I register it?

The hull is covered for three years from the date of retail purchase and accessories for one year.

The warranty registration form should be submitted within 30 days of the original purchase date, and you should keep your sales receipt as proof of purchase. Claims are handled through the dealer you bought the kayak from — for kayaks bought here, that is us, so start with our team. You will need your serial number, date of purchase and photos of the issue.

Stated exclusions include normal wear and tear, accident, neglect or misuse, prolonged UV or saltwater exposure, commercial or rental use, kayaks towed behind a power or sail boat, colour variation, and products that have been “structurally altered or modified.” Ask our team and we will send you the full warranty terms.

3 Waters Kayaks are built by Feelfree US, so warranty paperwork and parts run through the Feelfree network — that is normal, not a sign anything is wrong.
