Kayak Series Trolling Motor

Elevate your kayak fishing experience with the Newport Kayak Series Trolling Motor. Purpose-built for anglers who need quiet, efficient propulsion with easy maneuverability in the water where fish actually live. This compact, lightweight motor delivers reliable thrust and whisper-quiet operation, perfect for stealthy navigation in both freshwater and saltwater environments.

Designed as an update to the NV Series and sized specifically for kayaks and canoes, the Kayak Series features a height-adjustable 24-inch shaft for optimal running depth, an extendable handle, and generous cabling for flexible battery positioning. With 5 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds, you get smooth, precise control on every outing. The built-in battery meter keeps your remaining range visible at all times, so you can focus on your catch — not your power supply.

Runs on a 12V 50Ah deep cycle marine battery. Designed for quick installation on most kayaks.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Newport Kayak Series

Who is the Newport Kayak Series designed for?

The Newport Kayak Series is built for paddlers who want a simple 12V tiller trolling motor on a kayak, canoe or pedal boat rather than a rigged kayak outboard. It runs a 24-inch height-adjustable shaft, a 6-inch telescoping handle and about 5 feet 6 inches of cabling so the battery can sit where it fits, with five forward and three reverse speeds and a five-point LED meter. Because it is brushed and runs on a single 12V battery, the electrical side stays simple.

What is the difference between the 36-pound and 55-pound Kayak Series versions?

Both Newport Kayak Series versions run on 12V and share the 24-inch shaft, the 6-inch telescoping handle and the five-forward, three-reverse speed control. Thrust, weight, current draw, propeller and breaker are what change. The 36-pound version weighs 18 pounds, draws up to 29 amps for 348 watts, carries a small two-blade propeller and ships with a 40-amp circuit breaker. The 55-pound version weighs 23 pounds, draws up to 52 amps for 624 watts, carries a large three-blade propeller and ships with a 60-amp breaker. Published horsepower equivalents are 0.48 HP and 0.83 HP. The 55-pound version has the higher published maximum draw, so at comparable high-output use it can deplete a same-capacity battery faster.

Which Kayak Series version is currently offered on this Eco Fishing Shop page?

This page currently carries a Thrust option with both the 36-pound and the 55-pound Kayak Series versions listed, so check the option selector on this page for what is selectable right now. Availability of an individual configuration can change without the description changing, so the selector is the authority, not this answer. Newport builds the Kayak Series only in these two thrust ratings. If the version you want is not selectable, call us at 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com and we will tell you what we can actually supply rather than leaving you to guess.

What battery and circuit breaker does each Kayak Series version require?

Both Newport Kayak Series versions run on a single 12V deep-cycle or marine battery — a 12V 50Ah battery is the recommended starting point — and no battery is included. Circuit protection differs by version: the 36-pound ships with a 40-amp breaker and the 55-pound with a 60-amp breaker, matching their 29-amp and 52-amp maximum draws. Do not fit a 60-amp breaker to the 36-pound motor just because a general feature list mentions one. Install a manual-reset breaker within 72 inches of the battery, as the Kayak Series owner's manual directs. The LED meter is calibrated for lead-acid deep-cycle systems and is not designed for lithium.

Will the Kayak Series 24-inch shaft fit every kayak or canoe?

No — a 24-inch shaft does not fit every kayak or canoe, and the Newport Kayak Series needs a suitable mounting location as well as the right depth. The shaft is height-adjustable, and the target is a propeller running 6 to 12 inches below the surface. Measure from your intended mounting point down to the waterline: too shallow and the propeller ventilates, too deep and it is exposed to strike damage. You also need a solid place to mount the motor, clearance for the handle to swing, a route for the cabling, somewhere secure for the battery, and enough capacity for motor plus battery. Newport's shaft length guidance explains the measuring method.

How do the Kayak Series five forward and three reverse speeds work?

The Newport Kayak Series uses a twist-grip tiller: rotate the handle clockwise for any of the five forward speeds and counter-clockwise for any of the three reverse speeds. They are fixed steps rather than a continuously variable throttle. Let the propeller stop turning before you shift from full forward to full reverse, or you risk damaging the motor. Five LEDs on the top cover show remaining battery; when four are out, input voltage has fallen below 9.5V and it is time to recharge.

How much does each Kayak Series version weigh, and which propeller comes with it?

The 36-pound Newport Kayak Series weighs 18 pounds and comes with a small two-blade propeller; the 55-pound version weighs 23 pounds and comes with a large three-blade propeller. Those weights are the motor alone — the 12V battery is usually the heavier item and has to be counted against your kayak or canoe capacity as well. The propellers are not interchangeable choices offered per version; each configuration ships with the one matched to its output, along with the drive pin, washer, tightening nut and spanner/wrench needed to fit it.

What is included with the Kayak Series, and is the battery included?

No battery is included with the Newport Kayak Series. It ships with the motor and its 24-inch shaft, the propeller matched to your thrust version, the propeller installation hardware — drive pin, washer, tightening nut and spanner/wrench — and the circuit breaker for that version. That means a 40-amp breaker with the 36-pound version and a 60-amp breaker with the 55-pound. You will still need a 12V deep-cycle or marine battery, a charger, and any battery box your kayak needs. Call 844-987-5777 and we will help you match one.

How does the Kayak Series differ from an NK HD kayak outboard?

The Newport Kayak Series is a brushed 12V tiller trolling motor; the NK HD motors are brushless kayak outboards on 24V or 36V systems, and they are rigged rather than clamped. The Newport NK180 HD produces 65 pounds of thrust on 24V, and the Newport NK300 HD produces 110 pounds on 36V. Both bolt on through a four-bolt bracket, steer by cable and use a digital controller. The Kayak Series gives you a twist-grip tiller, five fixed speeds and one 12V battery — simpler to rig, with far less power.

What saltwater care and warranty coverage apply to the Kayak Series?

The Newport Kayak Series is rated for salt and fresh water, and carries a two-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, restricted to the original owner and non-transferable. After every saltwater use, rinse thoroughly with fresh water, but only the areas that contacted salt water — avoid wetting the top cover, because water there can damage the circuitry. Store it where it will not freeze. Claims need proof of purchase plus photos or video; no registration is required. Commercial use, neglect, abuse, lack of maintenance, accident, improper use or assembly and failed repairs are excluded, and the buyer pays transport. See the Newport warranty page.
