Frequently Asked Questions About the Minn Kota Kayak Terrova

What is the difference between the freshwater Minn Kota Kayak Terrova and the saltwater Riptide Kayak Terrova?

The Riptide Kayak Terrova is the version built for saltwater; the standard Kayak Terrova is for freshwater only. Both deliver 55 lb of thrust on a 36-inch composite shaft with the same GPS feature set, so the difference is corrosion protection rather than performance. Riptide lower unit housings are grit-blasted, coated in aluminum to resist oxidation and rust, then finished with powder coat paint.

Choose by where you fish. The freshwater version is not built to that standard, and rinsing it after a saltwater trip does not make it saltwater-rated — running a freshwater motor in salt can dramatically reduce its life and voids the warranty. If you fish salt or brackish water at all, order the Riptide version.

Will the Minn Kota Kayak Terrova fit my kayak?

The Kayak Terrova must only be used on a kayak built to accommodate a trolling motor. It bow-mounts as close to the centerline or keel as the deck allows, on a structurally suitable area with the underside accessible so holes can be drilled and nuts and washers fitted. The motor rest has to sit far enough beyond the edge of the hull, and the motor needs an obstruction-free path through its whole travel as it lowers into the water and comes back up to stow.

Its overall dimensions are 49 inches long, 16.53 inches wide and 40 lb 8 oz — overall product dimensions, not a mounting footprint or bolt pattern, so do not use them as a drilling template. You may also need the MKA-21 quick release bracket or a model-specific adapter plate. Send us your kayak's make, model and year and we will confirm the fit.

What do 55 lb of thrust and a 36-inch shaft mean, and how fast will the Minn Kota Kayak Terrova go?

Both versions of the Kayak Terrova are 12-volt, 55 lb thrust motors on a 36-inch composite shaft, and no top speed is published for either one. Thrust measures static pulling force. It is not horsepower, it is not speed, and there is no valid conversion between them.

Your actual speed depends on hull shape and length, total loaded weight, wind, current, how deep the prop runs and the condition of your battery. The 36-inch shaft is the current shaft configuration for both versions; whether it suits your kayak depends on your mounting height and whether the motor can be set to the operating depth you need. Anyone quoting a specific mph figure for this motor is estimating.

Does the Minn Kota Kayak Terrova come with a battery and charger, and what battery does it need?

No battery and no charger are included with either version of the Kayak Terrova; both are separate purchases. This is a 12-volt motor with a 50-amp maximum draw. For best results choose a 12-volt deep cycle marine battery rated for at least 110 amp hours, and check its printed amp-hour rating rather than relying on group size alone — batteries within the same group can have different capacities. Larger groups commonly carry more capacity, but the label rating decides it.

If you are going lithium, voltage alone is not enough. Confirm the pack's continuous discharge rating supports the 50-amp maximum draw and that its charging profile is compatible with your charger, because an undersized rating lets the battery management system restrict power. These are brushed motors, so do not run above 85% power, or Speed 8.5, on lithium. Tell us your setup and we will size it with you.

What circuit breaker and wiring does the Kayak Terrova need?

Protect the Kayak Terrova with a 60-amp circuit breaker at 12 VDC — the rating Minn Kota specifies for 50 to 55 lb thrust motors, matched to this motor's 50-amp maximum draw. Fit it on the positive lead as close to the battery as the installation allows.

Do not extend the supplied leads more than 9 feet, and use 10 AWG single-strand wire with 90°C minimum insulation when you do; longer runs should go to a certified marine technician. Undersized wire causes voltage drop rather than an obvious failure, so size it for the run you actually have rather than the run you hope for.

How long will the Kayak Terrova run on one charge?

No runtime figure is published for the Kayak Terrova, because runtime is a function of your battery and your conditions rather than the motor. Amp hour capacity, the speed you hold, hull and total load, wind and current, battery age and the quality of your wiring all move the number, and the same motor will not give you the same day on a fresh high-capacity battery as it will on a tired one.

Digital Maximizer helps: it is a variable-speed drive that delivers only the power your speed setting calls for instead of stepping between fixed speeds, so slow trolling draws far less than a fixed-speed motor would. A push-to-test battery meter on the mount reports charge in four increments.

Which GPS functions does the Minn Kota Kayak Terrova have?

The Kayak Terrova runs Minn Kota's Advanced GPS Trolling System, and both versions carry the same function set: Spot-Lock GPS anchoring, AutoPilot in locked-heading and locked-course forms, Drift Mode, Follow Mode, Cruise Control, path recording and variable speed and steering control.

Locked heading holds a compass direction; locked course adds GPS data and corrects for wind and current to hold the line you intended. Spot-Lock Jog, which shifts an anchored position in five-foot increments, uses the separately sold heading sensor accessory. This is the current Advanced GPS Trolling System rather than the older i-Pilot generation. Do not assume an accessory or function from an earlier Terrova, Ultrex or Instinct system is compatible — verify the exact motor generation and the accessory before ordering.

What does the included Micro Remote control on the Kayak Terrova, and do I need a phone or a Humminbird fish finder?

The Micro Remote is included and runs the Kayak Terrova on its own: prop on and off, speed up and down, steering left and right, a maximum-speed shortcut, Spot-Lock and an AutoPilot toggle. No phone and no fish finder are required to operate the motor. What the Micro Remote cannot do is save Spot-Lock locations or choose between the two AutoPilot modes; those need the full-size Advanced GPS Navigation wireless remote or a connected fish finder, both sold separately.

The One-Boat Network app pairs over Bluetooth and adds speed, steering and GPS navigation control from an Apple or Android device, and a software update is sometimes required first. The 15-foot Ethernet cable connects the motor to a compatible Humminbird unit — APEX, XPLORE and SOLIX connect directly, HELIX needs an adapter cable. Not every Humminbird is supported, so send us your model and we will check it.

Does the Kayak Terrova stow and deploy by itself?

No. Stow and deploy are manual on both versions of the Kayak Terrova. Press the stow/deploy lever on the mount and the fall-away ramps let the shaft slide down; you loosen the depth collar, guide the motor down, set your running depth and lock the collar, then reverse that to stow.

There is no auto stow/deploy and no power trim on this motor, so depth is always set by hand at the collar. Auto Park orients the lower unit into the stow position on the freshwater version — it does not lift, lower or trim the motor. Lay out your bow so you can reach both the lever and the collar from the seat.

What comes in the box with the Minn Kota Kayak Terrova, and what warranty does it carry?

Both versions of the Kayak Terrova ship with the motor, the Micro Remote and its lanyard, a safety switch kit, the MKP-32 Weedless Wedge 2 prop and mounting hardware; the freshwater version also ships with a 15-foot Ethernet cable. There is no battery, charger, circuit breaker, foot pedal, fish finder or transducer in the box, and this motor has no built-in sonar. A compatible Terrova foot pedal is available separately. It is not included with either version.

The motor carries a two-year limited warranty, and the composite shaft carries a separate limited lifetime warranty — the shaft, not the whole motor. Keep your receipt, because without it coverage is calculated from the manufacturing date. The third-year registration extension offered on some Minn Kota motors does not apply here. Rinse the Riptide version with fresh water after every saltwater trip.
