Frequently Asked Questions About the Old Town Sportsman 106 Powered by Minn Kota

Who is the Sportsman 106 PMK best suited to?

Anglers who want Minn Kota power in the shortest, most storable hull of the powered Sportsman range. At 10 ft 6 in and 37 in wide it is unusually wide for its length, which is what gives it a stable deck and a 638 lb total capacity.

It suits ponds, lakes, slower rivers and protected inshore water, and it fits places a 13 ft hull does not — a short garage, a truck bed, a tight launch.

What is safe on a given day is decided by wind, chop, current, boat traffic, water temperature, your load and your own experience — not by the hull specification. Build up gradually rather than starting on the most exposed water you can find.

How much weight can the Old Town Sportsman 106 Powered by Minn Kota carry?

Total capacity is 638 lb and usable capacity is 515 lb. Those are different numbers and the second one is the one that matters to you.

Total capacity includes the assembled kayak itself. Usable capacity is what is left for people, gear, pets and any equipment you add, after the 121 lb assembled weight is accounted for. Never treat the total figure as the amount you can load aboard.

The motor and its console are already accounted for in the assembled weight, but you supply the battery. Whatever battery you fit comes out of the usable figure, so subtract it before you plan the rest of your load.

Leave a margin below the usable figure rather than loading to it. A kayak loaded to its limit sits lower, handles differently and has less freeboard in chop.

How is the motor powered, and does a battery come with it?

The motor is a 45 lb thrust, 12V saltwater-ready Minn Kota, integrated into the kayak rather than clamped on as an afterthought.

The battery is not included. The specification calls for a 12V Group 27 marine sealed deep-cycle battery, which you supply. Budget for the battery and a charger when you are pricing this boat.

Tell us what you intend to run and how long you want to stay out, and we will talk through sizing before you order rather than after. If you want us to check a specific setup before you order, call 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com.

Does it have Spot-Lock or i-Pilot?

No. This model uses a straightforward Minn Kota motor without i-Pilot or Spot-Lock. There is no GPS position-holding on this kayak.

This is the single most common mix-up in the powered Sportsman range, so it is worth being blunt about it. If GPS anchoring is what you actually want, the AutoPilot models are the ones that have it — the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 is the closest equivalent in size — and we would rather you spent the difference deliberately than discovered the gap on the water.

If you want us to check a specific setup before you order, call 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com.

Can I still paddle it if the battery dies?

Yes. It is a kayak first, and it paddles. That is your backup, and it is the reason a paddle belongs aboard on every single trip regardless of how charged you think the battery is.

Be realistic about what that backup feels like. At 121 lb assembled plus your gear, this is a heavy hull to paddle any distance, and it will be slower and harder work than an unpowered kayak of the same length. Plan your range so that paddling back is an inconvenience rather than an emergency.

Watch the wind in particular. Getting out with the wind behind you and finding the battery low for the return is how a pleasant day turns into a long one.

Do I need to register a motorized kayak?

Registration rules depend on where you paddle, not on the kayak. Many states require a motorized vessel to be registered even when the motor is electric, and some require it for any vessel over a certain length. Because the requirement varies by state and can change, check with your own state boating agency before your first trip rather than assuming.

If you want us to check a specific setup before you order, call 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com.

Can I use it in saltwater?

The motor is described as saltwater-ready, and that description applies to the motor rather than being a blanket rating for every component.

Whatever you fish, rinse the kayak, the hardware and every moving part with fresh water as soon as you are off the water. Salt does its damage while it dries, not while you are fishing. Pay attention to fasteners, tracks, cables and any drive or motor components, and let everything dry before storage.

How do I transport and store it?

Length is 10 ft 6 in, width is 37 in, and the assembled weight is 121 lb.

For transport, take off the motor console (16 lb), the battery box (4 lb) and the seat (6 lb), and lift the battery out separately. That is the difference between moving an awkward assembled boat and moving a hull.

Before you commit to a rack, confirm the load ratings of your vehicle, your crossbars, your rack system and any loading aid you plan to use — those ratings, not the kayak weight alone, decide what is safe. We are not going to tell you how many people it takes to lift; that depends on the two of you, the ground and the vehicle.

What warranty applies?

Coverage is split by component, and the periods are different. The hull and deck carry limited lifetime coverage for the original retail purchaser, subject to the published terms. The motor and electrical components carry two years of coverage — not the longer term that applies to mechanical pedal drives, which is a distinction worth knowing before you compare models. Accessories are generally covered for one year.

Warranty service does not go through the retailer. Retailers are not authorized to perform warranty repairs on these kayaks, so the claim is opened directly with Old Town customer service rather than with us. We can help you identify the component and the right support path, but we do not decide coverage. If you want us to check a specific setup before you order, call 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com.

How should I look after it?

Rinse the hull, the hardware, the tracks and every moving part with fresh water after each trip, and let it dry before it goes away. Most of the problems people bring to us are corrosion and grit, and both are prevented at the hose rather than fixed later.

Keep the electrical connections clean and dry, check them for corrosion at the start of each season, and follow the manufacturer's charging and storage guidance for the battery rather than leaving it flat over winter.

Store it out of prolonged direct sunlight and support the hull evenly rather than on one hard point. Polyethylene deforms slowly under concentrated pressure, and a hull that has sat on a narrow bar through a season shows it.
