If you choose to replace a kayak with minor cosmetic damage instead, then you will be charged a 20% restocking fee.  

The Eco Fishing Shop definition of damage is when the kayak is delivered in a condition that compromises the hull and is confirmed with the vendor that would void the warranty.

Raising the seat off the deck keeps you out of water in the footwell and gives proper back support for a full day.

Taking it out before loading also drops the boat to 79 lb, which is worth doing if you lift alone.

How stable is the Old Town Sportsman 120 for standing and fishing?

The Old Town Sportsman 120 is 33.5 in wide, slightly narrower than the Sportsman 106, with a flat standing area down the center.

We cannot promise that standing will work for you on any kayak. Balance, load, wind, current, chop, water temperature and experience all decide it on the day.

Practice in shallow, sheltered water before standing where a swim would matter.

Can a pedal drive or a motor be added to the Old Town Sportsman 120 later?

No pedal drive can be retrofitted to the Old Town Sportsman 120. No PDL retrofit kit is produced for paddle hulls, and the ePDL+ RetroFit fits only kayaks built with a PDL Drive.

The Sportsman PDL 120 is the same hull length with the drive fitted from new, and our pedal-drive comparison guide compares the systems.

This model has no factory mounting plates, so check any third-party motor bracket against the deck first.

How is the Old Town Sportsman 120 transported and stored?

The Old Town Sportsman 120 weighs 85 lb assembled and 79 lb with the seat out, at 12 ft long.

Whether it goes on your roof is set by the lowest of your vehicle roof rating, crossbar rating and rack rating, so check all three. A kayak cart handles the walk from the car.

What warranty applies to the Old Town Sportsman 120?

The hull and deck of the Old Town Sportsman 120 carry limited lifetime coverage for the original retail purchaser.

Accessories such as paddles and life jackets are covered for one year, and the same one-year term covers a rudder kit or any other accessory added later.

There is no drive or motor here, so the five-year and two-year component periods do not apply. Coverage runs from the original purchase date to the original retail purchaser only.

Can the Old Town Sportsman 120 be used in saltwater, and how should it be looked after?

Yes, the Old Town Sportsman 120 can be used in saltwater as long as it is rinsed with fresh water afterward.

The hull itself is not the vulnerable part. Track hardware, the transducer mount, the seat frame and any electronics fittings corrode first, so rinse those carefully and dry them.

Store the boat shaded and evenly supported rather than resting on one hard point.

Save paddle down Mississippi 2145 miles/79 days on boat

I just completed kayaking 2145 miles/79 days down the Mississippi river with the Old Town Sportsman 120. The boat is very safe and probably impossible to sink. I had the boat completely submerged with water and there was no fear of sinking. I battled 8ft waves from barges with no fear of flipping. The one concern I did have was seat material eventually stretched and caused my lower back to rub on cross bar on back side of seat. I was able to modify seat with some tiedowns. Recommend adding adjusting Velcro for when this issue occurs. Instead of having just one adjustment with Velcro. You can add one or two more Velcro strips to be able to tighten as seating material begins to stretch and loosen.

Received my Kayak June 26th. Well packaged with no flaws. Brought it out July 3rd. Great handle, smooth ride with zero tracking issues! My only thing is I maybe should have purchased the 10.6 due to the extra 2 feet and a little extra weight. Plenty of room for cargo in the rear and space up front. Great Kayak but my initial thought was length instead of ease loading and unloading by myself. Super easy on flat ground but the big slope on the ramp takes a little extra. Highly recommended!

Ready for spring

Have only gotten a chance to get in the water once since receiving the Sportsman 120 paddle. Took it out last Sunday on Lake Iowa, it was very windy and choppy even on a smaller lake. Even with waves coming over the bow it was very stable even when paddling 90 degrees to the wind with waves over the side. Wanting to see how it does on the local rivers next summer as it's normally rivers that I will be in.

Unfortunately, it can not. This is intended to be a paddle-only kayak, though some smaller outboard motors can be added to this model.

Is this a good kayak for a 238lb guy who doesn't use a lot of gear only a small tackle box and a rod and stable and suitable for shallow and deep water?

Also is it possible to mount a motor on these?

At 238 lbs with light gear, you’re well within its capacity (~500 lbs total), so it’ll feel stable and comfortable. The hull is wide and very stable, making it solid for both sitting and standing. It works well on lakes, ponds, and slow rivers — good in both shallow and deeper water.

You can add a motor too (stern mount like Newport/Bixpy). It’s not fully motor-optimized like some models, but it handles a basic motor setup just fine.
