Sportsman Autopilot 120 Features

Frequently Asked Questions About the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120

Who is the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 best suited to?

The Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 suits anglers who want GPS-held position and remote motor control in a 12 ft hull rather than the longer 136.

It is 37 in wide, weighs 152 lb assembled and carries 406 lb of people and gear, with a 45 lb thrust Minn Kota motor and an i-Pilot remote.

Choose it over the AutoPilot 136 if you launch from tighter water or want less boat to move on land.

How much weight can the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 carry?

The Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 is rated at 558 lb total and 406 lb usable.

Usable capacity is what is left for you, tackle and electronics once the 152 lb assembled boat is deducted. That assembled figure is the 122 lb hull plus the 24 lb motor console and the 6 lb seat, so do not subtract those again.

The battery is bought separately and is not counted in either number.

How is the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 powered and does a battery come with it?

The Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 uses a 45 lb thrust, 12V, saltwater-ready Minn Kota motor with lift-assist, and the battery is not included.

The supplied box takes a group 27 battery of 12 by 7 by 9 inches or smaller. It must be 12V and able to continuously discharge at least 50 amps, with 100 amp-hours or greater recommended.

Sealed lead-acid, AGM and lithium are all suitable. The Old Town battery support page carries the full requirement.

Does the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 have i-Pilot and Spot-Lock?

Yes, the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 is controlled by a Bluetooth i-Pilot remote and includes Spot-Lock, which uses GPS in the motor head to hold the kayak on a chosen point against wind and current.

The system is i-Pilot, not i-Pilot Link, so the motor cannot be networked to a Humminbird fish finder.

The Sportsman 106 Powered by Minn Kota and the Sonata 106 MK have neither feature, so do not assume the two motor systems are interchangeable.

Can the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 still be paddled if the battery dies?

Yes, the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 can be paddled, and a paddle should be aboard on every trip for that reason.

At 152 lb assembled and 37 in wide it is slow and heavy under paddle power, so treat it as a way back to the ramp rather than a normal way to fish.

Published test figures suggest roughly two hours at full throttle on a 100 amp-hour battery, so plan your range with a margin.

What registration requirements apply to the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120?

The Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 may require registration because it has motorized propulsion.

Rules can differ between inland and coastal waters within the same state. Registration, numbering, education, equipment and operating requirements vary by state and can change.

Check the current rules with the boating authority for every state where the kayak will be operated. The U.S. Coast Guard state boating law directory lists them.

Can the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 be used in saltwater?

Yes, the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 carries a saltwater-ready Minn Kota motor and is suitable for inshore salt use.

Rinse the hull, the motor console, the shaft, the propeller and all wiring connections with fresh water at the end of every salt trip and let them dry.

Take the battery out, clean the terminals, and check the propeller for line before storage.

How is the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 transported and stored?

Remove the battery, the 24 lb motor console and the 6 lb seat from the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 first, which leaves a 122 lb hull from 152 lb assembled.

Roof capability is set by the lowest of your vehicle roof rating, crossbar rating and rack rating, not by the hull weight on its own.

Whether that lift works depends on the vehicle, the rack, loading aids and your own lifting ability. A cart or trailer may suit better.

What warranty applies to the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120?

Coverage on the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 is split by component and the periods are not the same.

The hull and deck carry limited lifetime coverage for the original retail purchaser. The electric motor drive system is covered for two years. Accessories such as paddles and life jackets are covered for one year, and a battery you buy separately is covered by its own maker. Coverage runs from the original purchase date and is not transferable to a second owner.

Claims begin with Old Town or the relevant manufacturer, under the Old Town warranty terms.

How should the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 be looked after?

Rinse the Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120, its motor and its propeller after every trip and clear any line from the prop before it goes away.

Charge the battery after use rather than storing it flat, and keep the i-Pilot remote dry and charged.

Store the hull shaded and evenly supported. Motor warranty cover applies to use of the standard and weedless propellers, so replace a damaged prop with the correct type.
