Frequently Asked Questions About the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132

Who is the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 best suited to?

The Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 suits anglers who cover open water and want power-assisted pedaling on a long hull rather than a 12 ft one.

It is 13 ft 2 in long, 36 in wide and 143 lb assembled, carrying 357 lb, with a 36V lithium battery and charger supplied.

Longer hulls generally hold a line better over distance and turn less sharply, which suits bays and large lakes more than tight creeks.

How much weight can the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 carry?

The Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 is rated at 500 lb total and 357 lb usable.

Usable capacity is what is left for you and your gear after the boat itself. The 143 lb assembled figure already covers the hull, the drive console, the seat and the battery, so none of those come off a second time.

Plan an angler, tackle and electronics against 357 lb.

What does the ePDL+ drive on the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 do?

The ePDL+ drive on the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 is a pedal drive with an electric motor built into it, offering three ways to move the boat.

You can pedal it manually with no power, add one of five levels of power assist while pedaling, or engage cruise control and stop pedaling altogether.

Reverse is available in manual pedal mode. A backlit display shows the mode and battery state, and it is rated IPx7 for water resistance.

What battery does the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 use and how long does it run?

The Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 is supplied with a 36V 20Ah lithium-ion battery weighing 8.5 lb, together with its 36V charger.

Published test results on a new, fully charged battery in flat water with a moderate load are 46 hours in Cruise 1, 23 hours in Cruise 3 and 3 hours in Cruise 5.

Those are test conditions rather than a promise. Wind, chop, load and how much you pedal all change the result. The figures step down as the cruise setting rises, because a higher setting draws more power. The Old Town ePDL+ support page carries the detail.

Can the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 still be pedaled if the battery is flat?

Yes, the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 pedals manually with no power at all, which is a normal operating mode rather than a fallback.

You lose the five assist levels and cruise control, but the mechanical pedal drive keeps working, and reverse is available in manual mode.

Carry a paddle regardless, because shallow water and weed call for the drive to come up whatever the charge state.

What registration requirements apply to the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132?

The Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 may require registration because it has motorized propulsion.

Its ePDL+ drive is a powered system even though the kayak can also be pedaled manually. Registration, numbering, education, equipment and operating requirements vary by state and can change.

Check the current rules with the boating authority for every state where the kayak will be operated. The U.S. Coast Guard state boating law directory lists them.

Can the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 be used in saltwater?

Yes, the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 is suited to inshore salt water, and its power-assisted drive is a saltwater-ready design.

Rinse the hull, the drive and the propeller with fresh water at the end of every salt trip, working the drive through its range while you rinse.

Keep the hose away from the display and the battery terminals, dry the connections, and take the battery out for storage.

How is the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 transported and stored?

Remove the battery, the 32.5 lb drive console and the 6 lb seat from the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 first. The published hull weight is 95 lb and the assembled weight is 143 lb.

Roof capability is set by the lowest of your vehicle roof rating, crossbar rating and rack rating, and 13 ft 2 in is a long hull to handle.

A cart or trailer may be more practical, depending on the vehicle and the rack.

What warranty applies to the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132?

Coverage on the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 is split by component and no single period covers the whole boat.

The hull and deck carry limited lifetime coverage for the original retail purchaser. The ePDL+ is an electric drive system, so it carries the two-year term and not the five-year period that applies to a mechanical PDL Drive. The supplied Amped Outdoors battery has its own two-year term, handled by Amped Outdoors. Accessories are covered for one year.

Claims begin with Old Town or the relevant component manufacturer. We can help identify the right support path, but coverage is decided under the Old Town warranty terms.

How should the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 be looked after?

Rinse the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 and its drive after every trip and clear the propeller of line and weed before storage.

Charge the battery with the supplied 36V charger, which takes under eight hours, and store it indoors between 40°F and 80°F rather than leaving it in the hull.

Keep the hull shaded and supported evenly along its length.
