Old Town Topwater 120 PDL Features

Frequently Asked Questions About the Old Town Topwater 120 PDL

Who is the Topwater 120 PDL best suited to?

Anglers who want a 12 ft pedal hull with 500 lb total capacity and the Topwater deck layout. The extra length over the 106 PDL buys tracking and glide.

It suits lakes, slower rivers and protected inshore water where you cover some distance between spots.

Conditions decide what this boat can do far more than the numbers do. Wind, current, chop, cold water and your own fitness all matter, so build up from easy days rather than starting at the limit.

How much weight can the Old Town Topwater 120 PDL carry?

Total capacity is 500 lb and usable capacity is 384 lb. Those are different numbers and the second one is the one that matters to you.

Total capacity includes the assembled kayak itself. Usable capacity is what is left for people, gear, pets and any equipment you add, after the 116 lb assembled weight is accounted for. Never treat the total figure as the amount you can load aboard.

Aim comfortably under the usable number. A heavily loaded hull sits deeper, turns lazily and gives you less room for error when the wind gets up.

How does the PDL drive work?

It is a propeller drive worked with your legs, and it gives you forward and instant reverse without shifting or fiddling — you pedal backwards and the boat goes backwards.

The point of it is that your hands stay free. You can hold position along a bank, back off a snag or reposition on a fish without putting the rod down, which is difficult to appreciate until you have fished a day without a paddle in the way.

The drive is mechanical. There is no battery, nothing to charge and nothing to run flat.

Can I take the drive out, and how shallow can I go?

Yes. The drive lifts out of its well, which is how you handle shallow water, weed and loading. Pull it before you drag over anything and you will not be replacing parts.

No minimum operating depth is published for this model, so we are not going to state one. Judge it on the water: if the propeller is close to touching, pull the drive and paddle through.

Rinse the drive after every trip and check the propeller for line and weed. Most drive problems start as something wrapped around the prop that nobody looked at.

Can I paddle it as well as pedal it?

Yes, and you should carry a paddle on every trip. Pedal kayaks get used in shallows, around timber and in weed, and all three are situations where the drive comes up and the paddle goes to work.

A paddle is also your backup if the drive fouls. That is not a common event, but it is a bad one to meet without a paddle aboard.

A paddle is not included with the kayak. Neither is a PFD, and you need one aboard for every person on every trip. If you tell us how tall you are and how wide the boat is, we can point you at a sensible paddle length rather than guessing at the counter.

Can I use it in saltwater?

No saltwater rating is published for this model. That is not the same as being told to keep it out of salt — it means the claim does not exist and we will not manufacture it. Care is what decides how it holds up.

Rinse the whole boat, and the drive in particular, with fresh water at the end of every saltwater trip. Salt corrodes as it dries rather than while you are fishing, so the hose is the single most effective thing you can do. Work the drive through its range while you rinse, and let it dry.

How do I transport and store it?

Length is 12 ft, width is 36 in, and the assembled weight is 116 lb.

For transport, take off the PDL drive (19 lb) and the seat (5 lb). That is the difference between moving an awkward assembled boat and moving a hull.

The number that decides whether you can car-top this safely is not the kayak weight — it is the lowest of your vehicle's roof rating, your crossbar rating and your rack's rating. Confirm all three first. A trailer or a cart sidesteps the question entirely and is worth pricing.

What warranty applies?

Coverage is split by component, and the periods are different. The hull and deck carry limited lifetime coverage for the original retail purchaser, subject to the published terms. The PDL drive carries five years of coverage, which is longer than the two years that applies to electric drives and motors. Accessories are generally covered for one year.

Warranty service does not go through the retailer. Retailers are not authorized to perform warranty repairs on these kayaks, so the claim is opened directly with Old Town customer service rather than with us. We can help you identify the component and the right support path, but we do not decide coverage. If you want us to check a specific setup before you order, call 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com.

How should I look after it?

Hose the boat and the drive down after every trip and check the propeller for line and weed while you are there. Two minutes at the ramp prevents most of what goes wrong with a pedal drive.

Store it shaded and evenly supported. Sun is what ages polyethylene, and a hull resting on one hard point for months will take the shape of that point.
