Fishing Kayak Accessories that Improve Storage and Organization

If we had to make one single admission about the shortcomings of fishing kayaks vs. bass boats, it would be storage space. You have less space to work with. As a result, you need to be far more intentional with your gear. Decisions have to be made about what you bring, where you put your kayak accessories and what is not essential to your success for each trip out.

Does this make a boat better than a fishing kayak? Of course not. Kayak accessories to not only improve storage space but streamline it have come a long way in recent years. With limited space and less room to physically maneuvre, a proper fishing kayak accessory can greatly improve your storage and organization.

Nothing frustrates this writer more than clutter and misplacing items amongst a tangled mess of gear in my fishing kayak. If you're like me, you are searching for ways to be more efficient with your storage and oragnization. Let's take a look at the different types of fishing kayak accessories that improve storage and oranization and then look at some of our favorite products.

Types of kayak accessories that improve storage and organization

Kayak storage accessories fall into a few different categories. Some utilize your accessory rails, some are crates with rails and attachments of their own and some utilize your seat. Generally, here are the different types of fishing kayak storage accessories:

  1. Crates & Boxes: Use a hard crate (or soft crate) in your tank well to store tackle trays, tools, and larger items. Many crates today allow for mounting even more accessories on them like rod holders, gear track, thru-hull wiring ports. Accessory storage crates can be used to house trolling motor batteries as well.
  2. Rail & Track Mounts: Most fishing kayaks come with ample accessory rails pre-installed. Utilizing your accessory rails to mount tool caddies, boxes, rod holders, storage trays, cup holders, phone holders, fish finders, etc can help keep your fishing kayak organized. Storage accessories using your accessory rails are easily customizable — you can move things around based on how you paddle fish and change on the fly in real time.
  3. Seat Storage: Like your car, the space beneath where you sit or the back of your chair can be transformed into a kayak storage space. Some fishing kayak brands have specific under-the-seat storage compartments. Universal storage bags for the back of your seat are a great option as well. Some fishing kayaks do not leave much room under the seat, so be sure to double-check your specific kayak to see if a seat storage accessory would work with your model.
  4. Dry Bags & Waterproof Containers: Perfect weather does not exist. Be prepared for the days where the weather doesn't cooperate. Dry bags are an affordable way to keep extra clothes, phones, keys and food organized and dry. Watertight tackle trays are also a small, inexpensive way to keep valuables safe and organized in your fishing kayak.

Many kayak anglers use a combination of the above fishing kayak accessories to improve their storage and organization. But, not all of us are the same. We all fish differently, propel our kayaks differently and have different levels of comfortability with how much gear we bring along. As time goes on, I personally try to strip it down as much as possible. You may be someone who has their fishing kayak rigged to the max.

As you look at the kayak accessories below, think hard about how you fish, where you fish and how you want your fishing kayak to be organized. Do you paddle, pedal or power your kayak? Do you stand and fish? Do you like having an entire bait shop's worth of tackle with you or do you like to be hyper-focused with specifc gear? Now, keeping that in mind, how can the following fishing kayak accessories improve your storage and organization?
