Frequently Asked Questions About the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132

Who is the BigWater ePDL+ 132 best suited to?

Anglers who want electric-assisted pedal drive on a big-water hull. At 13 ft 2 in and 36 in wide with 500 lb total capacity, it is built to cover distance and carry a full load.

It suits large lakes, open bays and coastal water where the assist earns its keep on long runs and into wind. The length is less convenient on small, tight water.

No specification tells you whether a given day is safe. Wind, chop, current, traffic, water temperature and your own experience decide that. Start on water you know and work outwards.

How much weight can the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132 carry?

Total capacity is 500 lb and usable capacity is 357 lb. Those are different numbers and the second one is the one that matters to you.

Total capacity includes the assembled kayak itself. Usable capacity is what is left for people, gear, pets and any equipment you add, after the 143 lb assembled weight is accounted for. Never treat the total figure as the amount you can load aboard.

Treat the usable figure as a ceiling you stay under, not a target you fill. The last twenty pounds cost you freeboard and make the boat feel sluggish long before anything goes wrong.

What does the ePDL+ drive actually do?

ePDL+ is a pedal drive with electric assist, and it gives you three ways to move: pedal it manually with no power at all, pedal with assist so the motor adds to your effort, or run it fully electric with your feet off the pedals.

Forward and reverse are both available, which matters more than it sounds when you are backing off a snag or holding a line along a bank without turning the boat.

The practical case for it is the long run home into wind at the end of the day, and the ability to keep working a shoreline for hours without your legs deciding when the trip ends.

What battery does it use, and how long does it run?

It uses a 36V 20Ah lithium battery, and a charger is included.

The battery weighs 8.5 lb and lifts out, which is worth knowing both for transport and for charging it indoors over winter.

Published runtime figures are 46 hours at Cruise 1, 23 hours at Cruise 3 and 3 hours at Cruise 5. Those are measured from a fully charged battery on flat water with a moderate load, and run time varies with cruise speed.

Read them as a comparison between settings rather than a promise about your day. Wind, current, chop, how heavily you are loaded and how much you let the motor do all move the real number, and they move it downward. Plan your range on the assumption that the return leg is the hard one.

Can I still pedal it if the battery is flat?

Yes. Manual pedalling is a normal mode of the drive, not a limp-home compromise bolted on afterwards. A dead battery costs you the assist, not the trip.

Carry a paddle anyway. A drive can foul on weed or a bag, and when that happens you want a paddle in your hand rather than a plan.

Do I need to register it?

Registration rules depend on where you paddle, not on the kayak. Many states require a motorized vessel to be registered even when the motor is electric, and some require it for any vessel over a certain length. Because the requirement varies by state and can change, check with your own state boating agency before your first trip rather than assuming.

If you want us to check a specific setup before you order, call 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com.

Can I use it in saltwater?

There is no published saltwater rating for this model, and we would rather say so than invent one. Owners do use these in brackish and coastal water; what separates a good outcome from a bad one is the rinse.

Saltwater fishing is described as an intended use for this kayak, but no saltwater rating is published for the drive itself. The two are not the same claim and we are not going to blur them.

Rinse everything with fresh water as soon as you are off the water — hull, hardware, tracks, fasteners, cables and any drive or motor components. Salt does its damage as it dries, so the rinse matters more than anything you do later. Let it dry properly before it goes away.

How do I transport and store it?

Length is 13 ft 2 in, width is 36 in, and the assembled weight is 143 lb.

For transport, take off the drive console (33 lb) and the seat (6 lb), and lift out the 8.5 lb battery separately. That is the difference between moving an awkward assembled boat and moving a hull.

Check your vehicle's roof load rating, your crossbar rating and the rating of any loading aid before you buy hardware. The kayak's weight on its own tells you very little; the weakest rating in the chain is the one that matters. How many people it takes to lift is a question about you and your driveway, not about the boat.

What warranty applies?

Coverage is split by component, and the periods are different. The hull and deck carry limited lifetime coverage for the original retail purchaser, subject to the published terms. The ePDL+ drive carries two years of coverage — not the longer term that applies to the purely mechanical PDL drive, which is a real difference between the two ranges. Accessories are generally covered for one year.

The battery is covered separately for two years, and that claim is handled by Amped Outdoors rather than by Old Town. Keep your purchase documentation for both, because they are two different processes.

Warranty service does not go through the retailer. Retailers are not authorized to perform warranty repairs on these kayaks, so the claim is opened directly with Old Town customer service rather than with us. We can help you identify the component and the right support path, but we do not decide coverage. If you want us to check a specific setup before you order, call 844-987-5777 or email sales@ecofishingshop.com.

How should I look after it?

Give it a fresh-water rinse after every trip — hull, tracks, fasteners and anything that moves — and let it dry before storage. Grit and salt cause most of the wear we see, and both come off with a hose.

Keep the electrical connections clean and dry, check them for corrosion at the start of each season, and follow the manufacturer's charging and storage guidance for the battery rather than leaving it flat over winter.

Keep it out of prolonged direct sun and support it evenly — wide straps, padded bunks or its side rather than one hard point. Polyethylene creeps under concentrated pressure and a season on a narrow bar leaves a permanent dent.
